Well the last few hours my server has being going crazy. We've never had this problem before, so bound to be a weird glitch. We keep lagging so much we can't move, then being disconnected with the error "Read timed out". Specs: Craftbukkit 1060 Allocated 384mb RAM Uses RToolkit server wrapper Plugins: (OpenInv, PaintingSwitch, PlgSetspawn, MyWarp, mcMMO, Permissions 3, HeroChat, SimpleSignEdit, IntelliDoors, LWC, dynmap, CraftBook, WorldEdit, MultiInv, StreetLamps, WorldGuard, MultiVerse, IBICF, iConomy, Essentials, AutoMessage, ChairCraft, SimpleSign, nSpleef, SecretDoors, MonsterBox, RToolkit plugin, Backup. I suppose a lot of plugins for 384mb of RAM. We have that weird amount allocated because I only have a total of 2GB RAM on my entire server, and I'm running 2 GMod servers, 2 MC, a CS:S and OpenTTD, but we always have about a quater of a gig of RAM available at any time. Server specs: 2GB RAM Intel Pentium D Seagate Barracuda 80GB I really see no reason for this to happen. We have never had this problem before, it's just been spontanious. There are no errors whatsoever when the server crashes, RToolkit just restarts it. Thanks for any help you could give me, I really need to fix this. Tosh
How many players are online at the time of the error? You should probably increase the RAM allocated to the server. (100MB or so for the server and plugins + 100MB for each player). Is the server swapping when this happens? What version of permissions 3 do you have? (mcMMO is known to have issues with Permissions 3.1.6)
Well there was mainly me and a friend yesterday, that's when it happened the most. I can't really increase the RAM allocated as there isn't any more RAM installed. The entire server has 2GB RAM, it's shared between 5 servers. I will be upgrading (building a completely brand new server) soon though. As far as I can tell, it isn't swapping, although I don't even know what that is. I can only monitor the stats through SSH. As far as I know, I'm using Permissions 3, one of the latest versions as I had a problem with it a week ago (fixed now), and mcMMO has never had a problem. It only started yesterday. I also think it may be to do with my friend flying around the map and generating a lot of new map, which the server can't handle to load now.
What's my problem? I've been running my servers for ages without any problems. It's only suddenly starting happening.
Your server is overloaded - thats your problem! Could run for 1000yrs maybe, nonetheless its overloaded. When you have linux use vmstat or top and check your lack of resources.
1) I use top to monitor my non-lacking resources. I never use all my RAM, and there is no swap. My CPU is never used more than 50%. 2) Soon I'm building myself a brand new server, with at least 4GB RAM. So it should be fixed there. The thing I still don't get is the fact that it was working fine, same stuff running, and THEN it randomly stopped working fine. If you can donate around £220 to me for the new server that'd be great xD. Know any simple tips to fix this, as in, now? I can't buy any RAM at the moment as that would be a waste of time. Also, do you mean there's a problem with the HDD?
Sry, but cant belive that 2GB can run all that stuff while mc is already eating huge portions of RAM usually... Anyway, out of curiosity - did you upgrade bukkit recently?
Believe me. it's running them all fine. A few glitches here and there, but hey, its home hosted, there's going to be problems. . No. I've had Bukkit build 1060 for weeks now.
Well, seems i found my read timed errors in spout 227 - spout uninstalled - no more read timed out errors...
How do I do that? See, the problem is that if I run more servers when I get the new one, (incidentally, I will be using Seagate Barracuda 500GB, when I'm using a Seagate Barracuda 80GB now), then wont this be happing more and more?
Depends n your OS, the read/write speed is more crucial than the disk size. Try get a HDD with a high RPM (usually increases read/write speeds) rather than a larger size one.
Well the Seagate I'm getting is 7200 I think. This one: http://www.seagate.com/www/en-gb/products/desktops/barracuda_hard_drives/ Is a bigger cache better aswell? I'm guessing that increases speed. EDIT: I'm using Xubuntu 11 by the way, for the server.
ah, when you use linux vmstat is your best friend to check whats going on - learn to read the values and see if there might be a bottleneck somewhere. Just a blind shot, though... This might be helpful: http://www.linuxjournal.com/article/8178
I've read it but don't quite find anything useful. I can run vmstat but it's not as useful as top. Will just adding more RAM soon improve this situation?
Currently the RAM probably isn't even DDR2. But the new stuff will be DDR3. The server is basically an old PC. Fujitsu Siemens Exprimo. The new server will be built by hand by myself, with every component being brand new out the box, or bubble wrap xD.
I experienced these annoying Read timed out errors and I found it was due to bugs in chunks. So I tried to repair my map with Chunkster. I have no more problems at the moment. I don't say Read timed out errors = chunks corruption, but it can part of them.
