java.lang.OutOfMemoryError: Java heap space

My server has been running well for days. It had been less than 24 hours since I restarted it (to add plugins). I went to bed, then woke up to people saying it crashed. I opened the screen session (the OS is Centos) and it was completely unresponsive and when I typed "stop" it didn't respond. Not even "Ctrl + c" closed it, so I killed the process...

I start it back up, people are able to connect a little, but then nobody was able to connect after about 30 seconds... so I shut down and restarted the Craftbukkit server process. Still, nobody was able to connect for a while but then without any changes on my end people started being able to connect and play.

I had 4gb of ram set to the java process (out of 12 system) and now I upped it to 6gb, but could anyone help me with understanding the errors/crash?

Well... it does say "Out Of Memory". Allocate more RAM to Bukkit.jar.
Also, it's easily recoverable, simply kill the java process and start your server again, if you have console access that is.

 

He said he did. He allocated 6 gbs

 

Hmm, what startup command are you / is he using? Anyways, it could be a plugin causing it. (Memory leak?)
