Plugin Authors: How to hook into Permissions

Permissions 2.x is being discontinued! 3.0 can be found HERE!!!

I am discontinuing Permissions 2.x and leaving the project. Permissions is not going away though! Since 2.6 I have been working closely with another developer and added them to the team. For the past several version they have not only been assisting with 2.x but also doing a lot of the development of much anticipated 3.x. rcjrrjcr will be taking over as lead developer of Permissions from 3.x forward. I have full faith in them and after working closely with them on the development on the last few version and the next major version I feel that I am leaving this project in more than capable hands. I put way to much work into this project to just leave it with anyone, and this is one of the few programs that I am incredibly proud of.

Many people will probably wonder why I am leaving again after taking over the project just a few months ago. I could quote drama and headaches, of which there were quite a few with this project. Unfortunately real life happens. Many people already know that I have been having medical issues here lately. Unfortunately while they have gotten better, they have not gone away. This coupled with other real life commitments, going to school full time, and starting up my own company, I am currently in the process of being laid off from work. At this point I have so much stuff going on in my life and am being pulled in so many directions that I am not able to get any work done on anything. This has lead to me missing commitments and letting people down on multiple things.

Permissions is also a very high maintenance plugin that requires a lot of attention and time. Right now I am not able to devote that time and do not feel it is fair for me to try to continue to be the lead developer on it. I had originally thought that adding other members to the team would be helpful, but unfortunately this just lead to frustration for them and myself as I just was not able to commit to the project enough. Hence, 3.0 has been rewritten almost exclusively by rcjrrjcr with minimal contributions by myself.

At this point I will be stepping away from the project to focus more on real life and to try to free up some time for other projects and to work with more individual like the wonderful HeroCraft Coding team to fulfill some commitments that I made to them a long time ago and sadly did not come through on. I feel that this is the best for all involved, both myself and the other Permissions developers, as well as the community who deserve someone who can contribute more time and attention to them and supporting them. I do not want to see Permissions end up like many other plugins with an absentee programmer and just slowly wasting away from a great plugin with a lot of potential to a headache with no support.

I will still be active in the community, just not as much as not in the same way. I'm sure my server will be more than happy to have their head admin back and active again as well.

    Thank you and happy gaming.

        • If it cannot find that it will look for world.yml instead in case you named it that when that is not what is in level-name:
        • It will rewrite the config file to be the proper name. At this time it does not delete the old one though.

      • Added a change to colorize() to fix it hopefully not adding an extra unneeded ascii character and thus creating a linebreak/color switch issue
      • Removed as it was not needed and was a artifact of testing I was doing.

BLOCK_PLACE and BLOCK_BREAK errors are the hardest ones to track down without having direct access to the server or having someone post everything. One thing that has caused a lot of problems and isn't usually identified quickly is if you are running the 2.7.1 version of Permissions. It had a small (read large) problem with it where everyone's permissions.yml file was broken and displayed those errors. You might check that if you know the file is named correctly. Another thing to check for is the default permissions<worldname>.yml file being created in the plugins directory. If this file is created each time you launch the server, it says there is a naming problem.

    Matt Phillips

can anyone tell me the default server command nodes for permissions?
such as teleport/give/time set and such
  5. Offline

if someone could help me, that would be great, i don't really understand how to use permissions
  6. Offline

There aren't any but you can use a plugin like DefaultPermissions to give them.
  7. Offline

I think i have found a bug, but the probability is low.(So i haven't tried deactivating all plugins for testing)
So, the deal is that the inheritance formatting resets to an unusable format.
    - 'Default'
seems to work, but it resets to
    - Default
which doesn't seem to work :s
please stop me if i am wrong!

    cb 740
    permissions 2.7.2
  8. Offline

Yup looks like I will have to do that. I was just wondering if there was another way so I didn't have to copy new players to two different places.

    Thanks for the response though.
  9. Offline

What part are you not understanding? Did you go thru the first post and the wiki?
What command are you using to get Permissions to save the file? I haven't been able to figure out anything that would cause it to do that.

Both formats should work just fine though. Are you sure there isn't something else that is being changed when the file is being saved that is causing problems?

Permissions is, well, not really working. It has been coming up with the following error...

It loads every permission except for the permissions for the group "Moderator".

    This is my config file.

I am running CB 740 and Permissions 2.7.2

    yes i did

How do you set prefixes and sufixes because when i set them it doesn't show them in the chat.
  13. Offline

    Psycho Robot

Permissions doesn't handle prefixes by itself. It just makes them avaliable for other plugins to use, such as iChat, Hero Chat, etc.
  14. Offline

You will need a chat plugin like iChat for those to work.
  15. Offline

Now i have now the permission plugin and i get a error as i delte a block
Could not pass event BLOCK_BREAK to Permissions
    Who can help me
    srry for my bad english
  16. Offline

Can someone give me the ichat link
  17. Offline

It will be really hard to tell if there is a problem with your permissions.yml file with it formatted that way but I'm surprised anything works when you are receiving the error you listed. Seems like the Permissions plugin didn't load.

    Sure. iChat

BLOCK_BREAK problems are usually caused by running Permissions 2.7.1 or a permissions.yml file name problem. Make sure you are running 2.7.2 and your file name is <world>.yml.

does anyone one know how to quickly add permissions nodes it gets anoying because people keep anoying me for permissions.
  19. Offline

i have the permission plugin 2.7.2 and i may not the symbool < and > in the name
  20. Offline

I'm on a mac, so "textwrangler". (inb4 osx sucks) it's the equivalent to notepad++ i guess.
Yeah, i had problems with inheritance until i changed it to - 'permission.node'.
I think permissions reformats the yml file when the formatting is wrong, my permission nodes used to be
    - 'permission.node'
before, but someday it became - permission.node
  21. Offline

Check out McMyAdmin works well for me.
  22. Offline

I really don't think that is Permissions that is doing that. I know PermissionsPlus will change the formatting a little but not Permissions. But still, there isn't anything wrong with either 'permission.node' or permission.node.

If you want to post your whole permissions.yml file, I can take a look and see if there is another problem with it.

Can anyone help me, ive heard this from several people just confirming before i actually do. But
i get players telling me that everytime they place a block it says that they dont have the permissions to do that
yet they still can. What im asking is if anyone knows how to stop that. Some players say it has to do with craftbook but im not to entirely sure

    Hello all,

I've been trying to get the MCMMO plugin to work properly with Permissions. When I have everything set up and log into the server though, I do not have access to the skills. In addition to that, when I break blocks (which would add experience to the mining skill) I start getting errors popping up on the server. (See attached image.)

I have my yaml file renamed to world.yml, and this is what it looks like:

    # System is no longer used, but may become used in the future
    # Copies is for multiple-world support
    # Put the name of the world you wish for it to be a clone of, otherwise leave it empty.
    # If this file is for your default world (the one in then you must
    # leave copies blank.
    # Example: copies: Derp - This will clone the permissions of the world Derp
    # Make sure to rename this file to the name of the world that is in under
    # level-name. So if it is level-name: world then this should be world.yml and in the
    # plugins/Permissions directory (ie. plugins/Permissions/world.yml)
    # NOTE: Do not use tabs while editing this document. Use only spaces. A good way to avoid
    # doing this is to use Notepad++ and replace the tab with 4 spaces.
            system: default
    # AntiBuild is included with this. To disable a group from being able to build then
    # set the build: flag to false (build: false). If you want a group to be able to build
    # then set it to true.
    # Groups can contain inheritance.
    # To make a group inherit the permissions from another
    # group simply place the groups name in the "inheritance:" like so:
    # Example:
    # inheritance:
    # - Default
    # All permissions including the asterisks must be placed in single quotes.
    # like so:
    # - ''
    # Otherwise errors will happen!
    # Globalized Permission settings:
    # If a permission contains periods (.) you can denote a globalized parameter:
    # - 'foo.*'
    # This will allow you to use all general commands.
    # Single Asterisk denotes all commands:
    # - '*'
    # If you give a group this permissions, do not have the group inherit any permissions
    # from other groups. Any users assigned to this group should NOT be given any additional
    # permissions either.
    # To exempt a node use the - prefix like so:
    # - ''
    # prefix: and suffix: do not do anything on their own. You need another outside plugin
    # such as iChat or HeroChat in order for these to do anything.
            default: true
                prefix: ''
                suffix: ''
                build: false
            default: false
                prefix: ''
                suffix: ''
                build: true
                - 'mcmmo.regeneration'
                - ''
                - ''
                - 'mcmmo.ability.*'
                - 'mcmmo.item.chimaerawing'
                - 'mcmmo.skills.*'
                - 'vampire.default.*'
            default: false
                prefix: ''
                suffix: ''
                build: true
                - '*'
    # Users denote which users are included in which group.
    # TheNo1Yeti is in the Admin group
    # Herpina is a member of the Moderator group but also has access
    # to the herp.derp permissions
    # Derpina is a member of the admin group but does not have access
    # to the derp.derp permission node
    # Users can also have a prefix and suffix as seen with Herpina
            group: Admins
            group: Players
                prefix: ''
                suffix: ''
            group: Players
            group: Players
            group: Players
Can anyone tell me what I need to do to make it so that MCMMO will work with Permissions up?

CraftBook is listed as causing this the most but other plugins may be causing it too. Some say to just add craftbook.* to your permissions and others craftbook.mech.*.

There isn't anything wrong with your permissions.yml file although you may want to give everyone mcmmo.commands.* so they can use the special abilites but that is up to you. If you do give them that, I would also take away mcmmo.commands.setmyspawnother.

As for your error, that is the error that seems to be coming up a lot more recently. What it means is that the Permissions plugin couldn't find your permissions.yml file. This could either be a problem with the naming, something really out of the ordinary with the file itself (saved as unicode instead of utf-8, ...), or you are running v2.7.1 which had a major problem.

That one I can't help you with but I can point you to the topic about it. Post your information there and hopefully they will get enough to figure out why it is happening.

First off, thanks very much for the quick reply. I am running the most up-to-date versions of Permissions, MCMMO, and Bukkit, and the other plugin I'm actively using with Permissions, Vampire, works with no errors. This is very baffling and disheartening as without Permissions, I can't really do very many other plugins as the players have grown quite attached to their MCMMO. Thanks for your assistance though, I guess it's just some crazy bug I'll have to wait on to get fixed at a later date.

im trying to find some recent info but 170+ pages is .. a lot.... so does anyone have any info on using anything other than a flatfile for permission users? a mysql table would be a godsend at anything more than a couple of dozen users.....
  30. Offline

People have said that 3.0 will have MYSql support but in the meantime, you can use sqlPermissions.
