Hello, I would like to have your opinion for my dedicated server.
I am going to buy a dedicated server but I do not know which os to put.

It is what best to make a server Minecraft turn shoot under bukkit?

    - Linux?
    - Windows server ? Or other? I would look forward to your answers.

It all depends on how well you know each OS, as well as your hardware.

The material I command a waiter server to dedicate on OVH (24go of random access memory, etc. etc.) But I do not know of the whole the use of Linux, and when has him sets typical O.s Windows, he charge we dearer (more expensive):/

Why pay extra for a Windows Server, when Linux works so well with Minecraft and CraftBukkit? Regarding performance, a well made Windows server is just as fast as a well made Linux one. Just don't use a desktop windows, but I guess you already know that.

Also, I think your hovercraft is full of eels.

I think Windows is the easyist when you want to make not so much slots but if you want over 100 slots then take Linux.

Thus best would thus be Linux? In spite of I includes nothing has this operating system, his risk of being funny:s
But who really changes between Linux and Windows, at the end I mean I know that Linux and more flexible, but the cheek really on the latency or the other one?

I think you should go with Windows if you are used to it and know it... (Its hard to learn a new OS!)... And Windows is the easiest way to build and run the server...
    - Just my opinion...

    @Mortibus
    Short answer: Linux
Long answer: Get Slackware 64-bit. Get Java 1.7 too. Make sure the VPS is suited for intensive Java applications. ;)

He has a dedicated server, not a vps ;)

My vote is for linux. You can use one of the prebuilt minecraft operating system such as MineOS, or roll your own with gentoo/slackware/arch. These require a lot of configuration and learning on your part so I do not recommend them. The server editions of many popular linux distributions are much more easy to use and are light weight. Ubuntu server edition uses only about 300 MB of ram. So I recommend using a minecraft linux os or one of the more easy to use linux distributions such as fedora, centos, ubuntu, or debian as some examples.

The linux file systems are also better than window's ntfs, they perform better on server systems and often do not need to be defragmented.

Dedica... Oh yes, he did say that... How does one "buy" a dedicated server? Or are we just talking about desktop computers running on home DSL like my server? :D

All right, I have just bought a dedicated server Linux. I hope that I would arrive has to take out me grace of it has someone tutoriel:/

  12. Linux is far the best OS for minecraft. Even if you are an expert at Windows, Linux will be much better.

    My self i use
    Server OS: VMWare

    Minecraft VM:
    OS: Linux Debian 6
    RAM: 5GB
    CPU: Phenom2 X4 955 3.2GHz

if you have a good enough internet connection you can roll from home, i have FIOS 25/25 and i have hit 50 people no problem (although the cpu is a bit too weak)

Go for Linux- MineOS+. Best performance you'll get for minecraft. :)

Though, as Fronix uses, VMWare would enable you to do a lot more (a lot more secure) with the server, virtualizing never does performance much good.

nope, Linux from scratch will have the best performance as you can compile everything for your specific hardware so the code ends up being more optimized
with modern hardware and VM software the loss of performance is minimal

@mindless728 You could make it easier on yourself and use gentoo which does the same thing as LFS but nearly automated...

but that wouldn't be as fun at all, btw i have only done 3 installs of LFS i don't usually install it i usually go either Arch or Gentoo unless i need something fast then its ubuntu

Ubuntu amongst Linux is pretty much the slow, fat little brother.

Orrr, you choose MineOs+ which is already optimized for Minecraft then edit it yourselves? The beauty of open source.

    Minimal but still pretty noticeable.

@jasvecht I believe he meant fast as in to deploy :p

BTW, running a gentoo distcc VM on your gaming rig is stupendously awesome for compile everything distros :)
