Hello everyone. I am looking for an affordable dedicated hosting service that is reliable and doesnt buy a new car with a credit card. I am thinking about hosting 20 people at once with no lag, and many plugins. Can someone tell me the most reliable service? If I run it on my computer, it lags out. Also, can anyone tell me how hosting companies manage to make these servers with no lag? Maybe I can try that idea. Please respond ASAP with your answer.

Server hosting.. I host my own server no idea.. anyways.. I will awnser your question about why they can host with no lag.....
Because Server Hosting with companies is very popular.. They use "Server Boxes" Which are different from Computers or macs... They DEDICATE to the server and focus on it... Hosting companies get paid tons of money to host and can run multiple servers on one server... If they buy say a server with 16gb and a i5 processor they can have a 300 slot server with barely any lag... But who would pay for that? ...

Do you want a dedicateted server (like a Root or a VPS Server) where you have to mess with the Server configuration itself (like Linux console "hacking" ^^ or using a Windows Remote Desktop connection) or do you want just some minecraft host?

If you want a dedicated server you'd need to google as these are country-specific (well not really you could rent a server anywhere, but best search for a local provider so you get the best connection possible. I am from Germany for example and my server is located in a Datacenter in Frankfurt, so I get a very very good connection :))

If you want "just" some minecraft host, maybe just take a look at www.bestminecrafthosts.com or also try google ;)

Well they have really BIG servers (with lots of RAM and fast HDDs and so on), and also theire servers are most likely located in a datacenter with very good connection (my server is like I said above located in a datacenter and has 100Mbit up- AND down-speed, which should be enough for a lot of players ^^)

Which has nothing todo with Dedicated Servers at all, its just a Dynamic DNS service (e.g. making a URL out of your IP, so 87.126.72.125 = something.no-ip.com, but it will still run on your own PC not on a server...)

Hmmm. Wht kind of hard drive would do the job for a dedicated server? I want to host my own dedicated server at my house. What operating system would be best for the job?

The faster the better. So if you have 7200rpm HDDs it will be good, putting those in RAID0 will be even better, getting a SSD Drive will be much better, and putting 2 SSD drives in RAID0 will be... well epic I guess ;) (Though be carefull with RAID0 as when 1 of the 2 HDDs fail / break it will mean complete data loss! You could also put up a RAID0 out of 2 RAID1 so you'd be on the safe side, though you'd then need 4 HDDs)... There are lots of possibilities, its your choice, and as I said the faster the better ;)

As for the operating system I'd choose Linux (to be more specific Debian without any Window Manager a.k.a. GUI), as its the most stable and versatile system I've come across so far.

Ok I have a western digital my passport external hard drive. It is 750 gigabytes and I have no use for it. Can I make it a minecraft server? It has a USB plug as well. I can install ubuntu on it if I want... Can some one give me instructions on how to run the server on my wd hard drive?

A ssd for minecraft servers is not that good, google why.
You better get some more ram and put the server on a ramdisk.

You can't run a server on just a Hard Drive... you'd need a PC for that. Sure you can isntall the server on the HDD but it needs to be hooked up to some PC which will then run the server off the USB Harddrive, thoug I would not recommend a USB Harddrive as its pretty slow compared to an internal Hard Drive.

If you have no experience in running a Server I'd also not recommend you to setup one as it may be pretty confusing for beginners, especially running a Linux one!

And BTW: Your PC isn't the only factor coming into a "lag-free" playing experience, like I wrote above. If you have a slow internet connection (to be more specific a too low upload speed) you can have a Super-Computer at home at it will still start to lag if there are more than several players online.

Yeah right maybe due to the high I/O Minecraft requires... but well it should at least last for several months, though I am aware that a SSD using in a Minecraft Server wont last several years like a normal Hard Drive (could) do ^^ But performance-wise its the best choice currently (except using a Ram Disk which is a good call, didn't think about that xD But well everything has its ups and downs, using a Ram Disk can also be bad when not backing up very frequently ;))

I run my server at my house and I recommend going to a computer store and buying a good computer. I did some research before starting my server and found out that buying a computer Is cheaper in the long run. For instance, my server cost around $800 dollars and I built it my self. The lowest I could find a dedicated server was at $20 a month, so in only one and a half years it is cheaper just to buy one. But that's just my opinion, some people prefer to just have it hosed for them.
