Is Bukkit Really Dead?

Ever since the DMCA takedown, everyone has been saying "Bukkit is dead", lots of staff members resigned because of it and have moved on, some to an alternative Sponge. But Sponge is very different to Bukkit, and many servers still use some sort of Bukkit, whether it is CraftBukkit or Spigot. Does Spigot count as Bukkit? Is Spigot dead as well? If they are "dead" why don't we, as the Bukkit community "remake" it, "relive" Bukkit, bring Bukkit back from the dead, Bukkit is and always has been open source, I am sure some of the members of the Bukkit community could continue/branch off it, (I wish I could, but I am not that good yet! :D). We could rename it if we had to, and this time not fall into the trap of Mojang, and Microsoft, plan to not get "bought" or "owned" by Mojang, that way we are not vulnerable to a DMCA takedown. I would like to here what people say about this so please comment!

Renaming Craftbukkit would not make it any less containing Mojang code.

@Necrodoom_V2, some minor changes can be made, but seriously what can they do about it? Isn't there a term on Github saying that public repositories are not copyrighted in any way, therefore any one may use the code? (I am not that good at legal stuff, so I am just kind of guessing here).

@ZP18 You cant relicense code without permission.

@ZP18 Dead is a relative concept. It depends on what you see.
The community itself isn't dead, as you can probably see yourself, it gets used every day by loads of people, new people joining every day.
The official development is gone, that is for sure.
Unofficial and illegal (which can be discussed here: http://bukkit.org/threads/dmca-talk.382442/ )
Yeah, there are forks around updated for 1.8, yes they don't provide downloadable server jars, but they are developing.

    1. Project development stopped over one year ago. We all left.

    2. Mojang happily confirmed that CraftBukkit could not exist ("Mojang has not authorized the inclusion of any of its proprietary Minecraft software (including its Minecraft Server software) within the Bukkit project to be included in or made subject to any GPL or LGPL license, or indeed any other open source license") under their terms (contrary to previous statements supporting the project).

Is the project dead? Very much yes.

Is the community dead? Not quite, but it's substantially smaller than it was. Most folks have moved on and many are excited about new stuff like Sponge

As for your plan, you are perfectly welcome to take the GPL-licensed code on GitHub and build your own server implementation from scratch, noting that per Mojang's statement quoted above you wouldn't be able to use any Mojang code/software in your project. Would be far easier to just migrate to Forge or Sponge (which works with Forge) which already is up to date with 1.8.

  7. People definitely aren't going to Sponge if it's that different. It will be harder to understand for longtime coders. Cauldron is basically the only other one without the same plugin code. Spigot, as Iv'e heard and seen, is responsible for what you call Bukkit 1.8.

As a plugin developer looking on the plugins page... I'm extremely disappointed. A lot of the plugins that are currently being made just aren't cool anymore, and I feel like a lot of it is dominated by simplified versions of Essentials or plugins with a slight difference to some other. In the past, there was tons of cool stuff, dungeons, etc. Right now there is more cool things being made in vanilla and Spigot, yet few take inspiration on bukkit. To me that isn't dead but crippled creatively, and it's certainly not because of the DMCA issues. What I dislike about Spigot is that so many of their plugins cost money, meaning they are unavailable to a large part of the minecraft community. In fact I'd say Spigot is supporting P2W, as those types of servers are much more likely to invest in plugins that cost money than others. Although I'd not just blame the lack of creativity on Bukkit developers, but rather the way the minecraft community treats certain plugins.

P2W Factions or PvP servers have become the norm. Good players have left due to servers becoming crappy and full of griefers, both in the game and the chat. The main party of minecraft to me seems to be 12 year old faction fanatics, meaning most plugins that are going to be downloaded have something to do with Factions or something these players would like. When I see a server advertised on mineplex, the majority of the time I see KitPvP or simple factions, and it usually is full of plugins that give free, powerful items :/

Longtime coders should be capable of adapting to any API. Especially when Sponge also operates on an events model. ;)

Heck, longtime coders should be able to adapt to two API's at once :p That's what my Stats plugin is currently working towards anyway. Currently supports the Bukkit API but there's plenty of abstract classes and interfaces available to implement it quickly for Sponge.

And the Spigot team has done exactly that, produced 1.8.x versions of CraftBukkit, which are used by over 75,000 server owners.

@Bobcat00 Im not sure why are you trying to restart an argument for Spigot somehow having ownership which you ended with

I'm not trying to restart an argument, you obviously are, as you didn't even reply to the substance of my post.

I have been running servers since 2010. "Bukkit" as a development project is dead. Meaning that all of the folks who were working on the code required to run a bukkit/craftbukkit server downloaded from the Bukkit Organization either quit or DMCA'd the project. Which is actually fine.

md_5 was a coder on bukkit back a few years and branched off to create spigot which was an optimized craftbukkit implementation. He has taken the DMCA situation and turned it around, he and his staff were able to create a simple single command buildtool implementation of bukkit/craftbukkit/spigot. There is no need for a bukkit/craftbukkit server file download from the bukkit site, you go to spigot, download the buildtool.jar, follow the instructions and blamo you have your version of bukkit/craftbukkit/spigot and you are done. Bukkit is not dead, plugins are still being made, files downloaded, help being given, the only thing not being done here is not needed anymore, it is being done better and faster over at spigot.

As for sponge, I wish them the best of luck, they have been actively developing their platform for about a year now and I think have a semi working dev version out with a dozen or so plugins. I have not tried to start a sponge server mainly because there is no need, spigot has kept my servers going, I am running minecraft 1.8.8 with all the plugins needed to make the adventure quest server we offer run quite nicely. There has been no interruption in my ability to run an up to date server and the devs at spigot, well I just can not say enough nice things about them.

To answer your questions, there is no need to make bukkit "relive", it has been being delivered since December of 2014 by a dedicated hardworking pleasant group of folks over at spigot. This site is great for finding plugins and as a resource for information and help for running servers and solving problems. Use this site for what it offers and go to spigot for what it offers and create and run an awesome server.
