Will Bukkit update for pre-release or leaked builds?

As I'm sure we're all aware, Mojang have adopted a new development and distribution model for Minecraft since around 1.8 was in development: pre-release builds. Though it really goes without saying, I'd like to make Bukkit's stance clear on these and other experimental builds:

At this point in time, Bukkit will not be supporting any build that is not an official update for Minecraft released by Mojang. If Mojang don't feel that they can recommend and stand by the builds they've released, then what makes you think we can recommend them either?

Keeping up with pre-release builds is an unrealistic feat. With each Minecraft update released we need to rewrite a large portion of CraftBukkit in order to make our work compatible with the Minecraft update. As it stands, the amount of work it would require to update our work for every pre-release is not worth it, especially if that work becomes outdated within two weeks or so.

Thanks for your support and understanding in this matter.

Thats Fine, There Is ALOT (Not As Much As 1.8) More Things To Code. I Would Be Suprised If You Got A Beta Out Before The Real Release

29 days until Minecraft is officially released. (If Mojang stick to their date)
    29 days...
A little more then 4 weeks...
Add an extra week for Bukkit to get their shit together so you will be waiting around 5 to a maximum of 6 Weeks for your server to be back in business.
now 29 days really seems like a long wait... But if you where told you had that much time to live, suddenly 29 days doesn't seem like such a long time. Hyperbolic comment I will admit but if that didn't give you any perspective then you are truly quite dense and too caught up in your own little world.

Patience people! If you are concerned about paying for an empty VPS just cut your service for a month. (unless you pay quarterly). And those crying foul about "their" players "abandoning" them need to get their big heads out of their own ass...
People being bored of your server is not Mojang's/ Bukkit's problem, they only lose you as a customer your patrons are still playing...

TBH the bukkit devs should STOP working now and take a break I know I would have gave up on developing bukkit before their build number went 4 digits... 1st wave of "OMG mi serber pluginz bwoked fixfixfix?!" would have made me go "FUCKITYOUINGRATES! I quit".

Props to Bukkit Devs for making a server platform that makes public servers actually POSSIBLE (stock standard server client give you NO power that greifers just can't laugh off). It will be a little agonizing having to miss out on the 1.9 fare without the convenience of the many bukkit plugins. But patience is a virtue I like to think I posses, so I think ill be fine.

-Server Admin gladly sticking to 1.8.

Anyone else wish mojang would buy the code from Optifine?

    JoneKone

No! are you crazy! That code is not the solution for Minecraft's performance. That is obsolete code the instant mojang actually starts to optimize the code.

And what?! Somebody is running 1.9 pre 3 servers! =D Oh my Notch, Why!? Why would anybody do that? Cos every player is playing single on 1.9 pre 3... So let them play it.. Why do you care?!

MC vanilla 1.9 pre3 server known issues
100% cpu time all the time even when nobody is online

    What? Isn't that enougfhfgh ?

So got to canary who cares? I don't. Why would already overworked ppl do even more overwork to make players play something that is preview for what is to come.

And somebody actually believes that come 29. They will release a READY, BUG FREE version? Who actually believes that? Don't be saying you do! Are you 12 Years old?

It's a BETA! what did you expect?! And to the guy who said.. Oh no 3 years in development and still not ready! Well you bought the Alpha!? What did YOU Expect?!!?

You moron! If you had read my post, I was saying the same you are, just in a longer more detailed post.
I am pointing out the fact that we will probably NOT have a READY, BUG FREE version by the release date, because Minecraft is in generally so buggy, that I don't believe they have a chance to make it Bug Free by release, especially considering that they currently spend so much time adding lots of pointless content, instead of actually fixing the game.
I DID NOT expect the game to be bug free for the past 2-3 years, I know I bought a Alpha release. It is the fact that the game is so FULL of bugs, and each new iteration has brought new bugs. This is why I don't believe the release will be anywhere near bug free. I'm not expecting bug free, not at all, but I was hoping it would be as bug free as possible. And instead of adding new content, I was pointing out that I would rather have then fix the bugs, performance issues and exploits.

I can understand the stance the bukkit team is taking on the matter. However, now that Notch has announced there will be no more releases until MineCon would that change this decision? From here on out he has said it will only be pre-release builds.
I know there is quite a bit of work involved, but it would certainly go appreciated.

Mojang is now running their own server. My hunch is they are profiling the server getting ready for the feature freeze next week.

Mojang should not release 'prereleases' for servers.
Playing an unstable game online isn't a great idea.

I did, I was just curious if Mojang moving to Pre-Release builds ONLY would affect that decision.

    You misunderstand the situation.

They are not moving to a rolling release system where all you get is pre-releases from now on.
The pre-releases are test builds for users to try so they can find and fix as many bugs as possible before shipping out the official stable version for everyone to use.

Given the statement by Mojang on notch's blog, quoted below, we'll be playing it by ear and see where things go. We may or may not get an update out for a pre-release but we cannot offer any ETAs, so please do not ask.

Okay thanks for the clarificatoin Seph. I was just curious as to the bukkit team's stance on the new method for updates leading up to the full release at MineCon.

This is why i have CraftBukkit on my server it as never let me down and i just love all the plugins out there, So keep up the good work no i mean keep up the GREAT work fellas . And i hope no one keeps going on about updates with CraftBukket as if any one in there right mind would think of doing an update on pre-releases and they are pre-releases for a reson to check if they have bugs so it would be a bit dum to do an update for it. If i had a vocie i would tell the team of CraftBukkit to not do any Updates intill the Fiinal Release in November 18th as im running build 1240 and i had no poblems with plugings i run loads all ok so like my Grandad all ways said if its working then dont play with it lol

I'm glad to see this position - it's both practical from a Bukkit team perspective, and nicely avoids a rather dreadful scenario for plugin devs and server admins alike: having a CB that requires a client that isn't what typical users will have (the manual pre-release builds) AND having another CB that supports what the typical users will have. The transition from an old to a new release build is complex enough without a 3rd case to consider (old->pre->new).

Just a general FYI, 1.9 will still be Minecraft BETA. I saw a post in here complaining that they are still adding things and not doing any performance tweaks before releasing 1.9 as if 1.9 was the "non-beta" 1.0 release of Minecraft, they will do the performance tweaking and general tweaking later. Not now. Now it's adding stuff, adding stuff, adding stuff. Be happy with it. It's a damn cheap and damn fun game. I know I am happy and especially with the RPG/Adventure direction they're taking.

Oh, and I understand the decision to not support PRE releases, that would be insane. They're giving those because people are generally complaining about seeing screens, but not being able to play. Others are against these prereleases, which is quite idiotic since you have to manually install them, just don't do it and you're fine.

  24. I've seen fully dynamic games that run much faster with better graphics. I remember a game called Neverdaunt:8bit that features dynamic worlds created by players using things more complex than all cubic meter blocks.

Precisely this. I wouldn't mind huge delays regarding 1.9 and 1.9 compliant CB if at least I knew my current worlds would survive the update intact. I don't mind depopulated towns (we play without them enabled on my server anyway) or sloppy mineshafts (ditto), but the chunk errors and biome overlaps (snow in 1.8 deserts on 1.9 servers because suddenly that area is "taiga" under the new generator's interpretation of the seed) are tedious. While MCEdit, etc., is an option, it's a poor one.

The optimal scenario would be one in which Mojang had finalized the terrain/biome code in 1.8, but sadly the past cannot be changed.

I just looked at that and it is very different. While it seems more complex on the surface, there are fewer parts. For example, the vending machines (I think) are one object that has been optimized, and only one placement must take place to make it. Also, there doesn't appear to be any block physics and most objects are dynamic. Again, look back to Minecraft, where there are constantly physics event happening and possibly hundreds of blocks are being updated.

  27. Minecraft only has six blocks that include physics and those are sand, gravel, water, lava, and both pistons. Besides that, everything sits in place. Even then, those blocks are also static until something happens next to them.

Another thing worth noting is something I learned from Spout. Signs with text cause lag in Minecraft. That's right. Text causes lag. I don't think that bug can be easily overlooked.

There was an oversight here that proves my point. You left out redstone, grass, leaves, etc. which all need updates, even if it doesn't seem like it.

The problem relies in the engine being used, the way he is doing it, and many other factors. We have made a 100% duplication of the system with xna and can render 80mil blocks with dynamic shadows and have 500fps. The limitations are most commonly brought forth by the source language you decide to use. While I am not 100% sure as to why he chose java I can certainly see the pros with it. The language works on any platform without any special instancing needed for each individual system, the language is mostly open and has hundreds of websites dedicated to documentation on how to use it, and its really simple to learn.

Before the fanboys eat me up, I am not knocking on what Notch has done, simply giving some insight to the direction of the conversation. As for the OP, sucks that you are not updating as we go along but I 100% understand. Notch needs to stop adding in random crap and care for the people who are making his game worth a damn ( past sp ). The mods, are the only thing that have kept the people coming in time and time again. If notch was to add API and mod support for servers he would see his revenue increase 2 fold. Sadly developers never really understand potential of letting their audience dictate the temp of the game by giving them the power to do things themselves.

In the end, it is what it is. If you dont like it make your own game! +1 to Bukkit for letting us know whats up.
