What does save-all actually do?

The reason I'm asking about save-all, is because I don't fully understand it. So far I've been able to save-all even when the server has crashed, but if people make changes (such as moving) between the save-all and the "stop" command people are in slightly different places I believe.

I also wonder how archiving save scripts work... if a world folder is archived while the server is running what kind of snapshot is taken?

PS: I CraftBukkit is wonderful. (using 318 currently)

I think it saves the current world to the world folder replacing all the files in there with the current ones.
If I'm wrong could someone please correct me.

Contrary to popular belief, chunks are not constantly being written to the hard drive. Notice how when you improperly shut down your MC server, not everything is saved. Save-all basically saves the entire world, in it's current state, to the world folder. Hence why it is run automatically when executing a stop command.
