I have had a big dream for a while now, to create a Minecraft Server. I have built the lobby, and most of the minigames, all I have to do is buy the server with a host I found. I have been working on building and bug fixes for about 1 hour per day. I was wondering If it would take any longer (hours per days) after I buy the server, to manage it because I will pay for it, but I play soccer and do other school activities and I was worrying that time might be an issue for my big dream of creating a server. FEEDBACK WANTED

Nope! Work on it when you can, it is not a full time job. :D
    Good luck!

I'm sure there are tons of people willing to be staff on your server who can help you run it when you cannot. I could help but I can't be on 24/7 >.<

Taco has a good point, staff members are a lot of the server also. You don't have to be on 24/7, lol.

You could have a couple admins with almost all of the privileges (preferably in different parts of the world so they can be on at different times), plus a handful of moderators with /kick, /mute, etc., to keep order.

The problem I have is keeping the admins and moderators around. Ours haven't been on the server since mid-December. :'(

The best way to run and start a server in my way is to start by having a server email such as: [email protected] for example. So that way you can have players email you comments suggestions and other related server stuff.

The second step is to hire staff or admins for your server. Meaning that you must have trustworthy staff or admins to help you out. You can also try to train your staff to your servers needs like Moderators for monitoring chat or somthing like that.

The third thing is to try and be on when possible to interact with your players and staff and make them feel welcome to your server. If you however are too busy and got a lot to do you can Promote one of your staff/players to Co-Owner and he/she can run the server when your not there.

You might also want to include your servers FTP file access and other information to the Co-Owner so that way he/she can work on your server when your not there.

Note: Make sure it's someone you can trust 110% Never give out your server host access to anyone you don't trust.

    I hope that helps! :)

For this, I would wait quite a while by running the server all by yourself, waiting to find someone active enough and trustworthy before promoting.

On my server I promoted players when I thought they were ready, it seemed to work out. I personally don't agree with applications. :)

I've been dumping several hours into my server per day, and most of it is setting up plugin files and getting many of them to work the way I want them to, and exceeding the needs of the players who join. i had my server on just a 512 at first with up to 8 players for the first 2 months just to get things setup and have just enough room to have a few test players, then on month 3, we went public and now handle up to 28 players =D

You can have staff, but just remember, it only takes 1 person who should never been given op to break months worth of work, i haven't had this issue and hope i never do, backup your server AT-LEAST once a week, world files and your plugin files, everything else isn't too hard to reconfigure if needed. I'd hate to see some one's world turned to sponge as we've all most likely seen on web videos.

Don't be afraid to tell people they can't be staff, it could save you tons of work repairing their trolling good time.

but back to your question, Yes you can just work on the server an hour or so a day, but sometimes troubleshooting can take longer, or certain projects you may want staff to help with, or make a world where only your staff can access to build things, then you can worldedit them in place, this keeps your main areas safe, unless you are on to keep an eye on them.

So far i have 3 staff members, they are just for moderating chat for now, but are looking good for a more delicate rank, only time will tell =) again, don't fall for that "I'd like to help you build, can you op me?" XD

If they don't want to take the time to get to know your server, then they wouldn't make good staff since they are already showing they are impatient, and not willing to follow your server's guidelines.

Think that about covers it... good topic =D

I'd suggest a lot more often than that. My automatic backup runs every 6 hours. And I use Prism to log everything going back 8 weeks. Chat log history depends on the traffic, but right now I have 3 1/2 weeks of logs.

NinjarakuPwnz Well Said. My server hasn't been popular since beta 1.7 (back when pistons would crash the server xD), so I'm a bit out-of-practice.
