Disclaimer: I don't know a whole lot about minecraft server stuff, or anything about minecraft. my gf and kids play. We set up a server off of our home computer (Windows 7) and that ran great.. then she set up a server on a paid host somewhere, but the company is crap so I offered my linux server to host the server. My server is for web hosting (I'm a developer).

When we moved the home server files to the paid host, we just uploaded the files via ftp and it worked. On my server I zipped up the files via ftp and then unzipped it to the server. I'm able to start the server just fine and connect to it via a client.. however no plugins get loaded, but everything else appears to be there. During the startup it does not show the plugins being loaded. I'm not sure if the there are any specific read/write or execute permissions needed for the files or folders, or any additional settings needed - I thought it was all just drop in.

Any thoughts? I can upload screenshots of the directories here in a bit if needed

    Moved to Bukkit alternatives.
@abda53 you do have multiple servers there, but you are starting minecraft_server.1.8.1.jar That one isn't capable of using plugins.
Please use http://pastebin.com for server logs next time ;)

Thanks. I will double check but that could explain it.. but I did grab that directly from the new server so I was assuming that was the one being used. and no, it is the only server there.

    I prefer pastie.org over pastebin ;)

@timtower So I tried 1.8.3 and that also didn't load plugins. My gf said the current server is running 1.8.1 and works with plugins. any other suggestions?

It looks like you are using the vanilla Minecraft server jar, which doesn't support plugins. You need to use a server jar that is either Spigot or Bukkit (for what you're looking for). It used to be quite easy to get a server jar, just click and download, however due to a DMCA with Bukkit, it is now a bit harder. You can check out the following link on how to get a 1.8 or 1.8.3 server jar, and read up about more information on it. It has a set of instuctions that aren't too hard to follow: http://www.spigotmc.org/threads/bukkit-craftbukkit-spigot-1-8.36598/ If you need any more assistance at all, let me know.

Thanks for the help. ocean you were right. The spigot jar was already there, I just wasn't calling it correctly. Server is up and running, just stress testing it now.

I saw there is an option for using mysql instead of flat file.. I'm assuming mysql is better than flatfile for minecraft.. if it possible to change an existing server to mysql?

The server itself doesn't use MySQL for anything. Individual plugins may use MySQL. But in most cases you do NOT want plugins to use MySQL, especially for a small server such as yours. The exception would be plugins which handle large amounts of data, such as block logging plugins.

Bottom line: Let plugins use whatever flat file or SQLite databases they default to using.
