I run a decent server open to the public. However I also run a test server on my local machine that I use to test upgrades and plugins. I don't want to just add a plugin or upgrade without knowing what might break first. Now, it was my understanding this is ok. And it is ONLY ok if it is for dev or testing purposes. Now, am I wrong? Please correct me bukkit community if I am. Otherwise, helping those who run test servers like myself should be ok. I understand the extreme side of the story, where those who like to pirate software and not pay for such a great game. But what about people like me?

I think its ok...... because then your not having to trust on minecraft.net for your server to stay up.... and I mean if bukkit programmed the feature in you might as well use it right? if you cant even use it whats the point then, just my point of view.

I think you missed the point. Not to have an offline mode for play. But instead, for testing or dev only. I hate to have installed a plugin only for it not to play well with another I already have.

yea I see what you mean.... yep sorry I got off the point:eek: I get into a soup box on these things:) um yes I also think its fine for dev and testing your not letting other people online right? and if you don't think that's ok you can just change the port and make it a testing but online.

oh ok but still they allowed it to be in bukkit.

I have a feeling that this thread is going to get a lot of comments :)

Now, the flip side is this. I understand bukkit doesn't support pirated servers in offline mode. How does one request help for an offline mode test server? Or the other part, how do you give help to someone running an offline mode server for testing?

Thats a hard one...... I wish bukkit supported offline.

From my understanding, they do ONLY if it is for development and/or testing. Not for game play.

But you and your friends play on it. I run two servers. One online for play. The second at my house for testing. It is not open to connections except from the LAN, thus it is offline. I test plugins and upgrades there before I go mainstream.

I think that bukkit's oh its offline, insta lock/delete policy without even knowing why its in that mode isn't doing any good. It's not going to help anything and theres plenty of legitimate reasons why a server would be in offline mode. I run all my test servers in offline mode so that I can login under more accounts to test with. Seems like a legitimate reason to me and since this is a dev forum, it seems like a good amount of people would be doing the same thing. Even if I were to paste my server.properites or startup log from my live production servers, my topic would be locked instantly because the mods don't even consider the fact that the person my be running bungee (in my case) and require that the server be in offline mode. Basically I think bukkits policy on offline servers isn't helping anything and potentially hurting things.

If you are running an offline mode server for help or testing purposes, you shouldn't need to request help from the community for that - you should know enough about how to manage the server to help yourself.

Its not about comments, its about making people aware of a problem we server owners have. I agree that maybe they need a new policy to combat the pirate servers. But the insta lock hammer is doing more damage than good. There are lines in the crash report that point out online or offline. Personally, if you see the server is offline running bungee cord but not xauth or authme you should at least consider it is a legitimate server.

but if its testing and you find errors, your not supposed to be able to get help? Your supposed to know how to do it all yourself?

Recently I did run into a problem with jails on my test server. The plugin was not updated for 1.4.6 or 7. It had an error due to a MySQL entry in the table for prisoners. Granted, I do know enough to fix most things, I do not know all. This is where we need the help from the community. To find those with the experience to fix the issues before I go mainstream. I do not code java, but I do a decent job of running servers and networks.

There are always ways to get help. Offline mode can be useful for testing, but is not required.

Offline mode servers are inherently insecure, and a waste of time to troubleshoot. We will have to disagree.

I would agree with your statement IF the server was running for play reasons. I however am among the minority that run one for testing. Thus no one else connects but myself and other test accounts from the same LAN. I require it for the multiple accounts and since it is on a closed LAN not open to a WAN.

Bungee requires the backend bukkit servers to be in offline mode as bungee does the authentication itself.

I guess that might be considered a mod instead of a plugin. Thus it is unsupported by the community. Maybe it is time for bukkit to expand and add a new forum area for "mods" with sub boards for the popular ones. I understand they already have their own forums, but maybe a board here with a sticky to each forums main support thread. This way people can help each other with the mods here or point them in the correct direction.

Bungee is not a mod, nor a plugin. It is a 100% standalone proxy server that allows cross server connectivity.

It use to be on Bukkitdev, but everyone kept using it as a plugin which was wrong.

Sounds interesting, can I get a link? However, the community would still consider it outside the realm of support just because of the offline mode. So, since I was taught never to complain about something without offering a solution or alternative., how about this? Add a board for the major mods to bukkit. One board with multiple stickies. A sticky pointing to an appropriate support page of that mod(ie. Spigot, tekkit, or forge). Secondly, don't help those in that thread, but just moderate it for content. Add a rules sticky to cover offline mode servers and conduct of this specific board. This will help reduce some of the traffic for the legitimate servers in the actual support boards.

This is not a forum for discussing mods or proxies that force offline mode. Keep in mind that you don't get any support here while running any of those.

So, even though you say you support devs and test servers, what you really mean to say is this:
Yes, we understand the functionality of a vanilla minecraft server has a mode to circumvent authorization checks. However, we do not support, in any way, a server that uses this functionality. If you run a server without the online mode check you will receive no support from our community.
Does that sound about right? Even if a server owner tests his/her server in offline mode to make sure a plugin they downloaded from dev.bukkit does not cause a problem before they go mainstream?

Might be time for an update then. Completely rewrite the policy too reflect this or a like statement.

I'm not trying to be rude, but don't even point it out if you're running in offline mode. If an error points out you're in offline mode, put it in online mode, get the new stacktrace, and post it here.

EDIT: I'm happy with Bukkit as it is. If people want other versions of Bukkit, want to modify it, so be it. But send them to the right community. I'd rather save the headache of reading through posts, documentation, etc. that isn't even meant for regular Bukkit users.
