Langauges other than Java

I saw this in the description of Bukkit:

"If you're not a fan of Java (we don't blame you), Bukkit's design allows for plugins to be written natively in any language with ease."

I was wondering if someone could point me towards examples of this having been done, or could explain the general process of interacting with Bukkit with another language (particularly perl). I did a bit of searching and turned up nothing.
