    Old description (open)
If you enjoy fighting monsters for glorious prizes or just the sheer thrill of battle, you and your friends can now join forces against hordes of Minecraft evils in the exciting gladiator-style survival mini-game MobArena!

Heavily inspired by Deminetix' Fight-plugin, MobArena is a PvE-take on arena-gameplay, with a similar class-based system. Instead of fighting other players, you team up with them to beat oncoming waves of monsters, earning rewards in the process. MobArena can be played alone, or with as many friends as you like!

    Features:
    • Fight oncoming waves of monsters
    • Play alone or team up with friends
    • Earn glorious prizes
    • Customizable classes, rewards and waves
    • Easy to set up
    • Extremely easy to use
    • Very few user commands
    • Supports Permissions and all major economies
    • Supports Spout
    • Supports Heroes
Note: When you post a bug report, please provide a stacktrace/error from the server log/console window. Post this stacktrace in either a pastebin, a pastie, or a CODE-block! The same applies for config-files, permissions-files, etc! Please don't put them directly in your posts, as they become gigantic and annoying to read. If you don't follow this guideline, I might ignore your post!

Wiki - Instructions, commands, FAQ, etc.
I have set up a Wiki for MobArena. It contains a bunch of information and guides on how to set up and customize arenas, an overview of all the commands, how to set up Permissions, as well as frequently asked questions.

New: MobArena now has its own IRC channel (#mobarena @ EsperNet). Click here for a web-based IRC client. Feel free to stop by to get help setting everything up if you really don't understand the Wiki and the instructional video, or to have a chat about MobArena (or anything else, for that matter) :)

    Troubleshooting:
To avoid wasting not only your own time, but mine as well, I expect everyone to do some extensive troubleshooting before posting bug reports. What does this mean?

Try MobArena on a fresh server.
MobArena works perfectly fine when I release it. Sure, there are a few bugs, but it works. If it doesn't work for you, something is most likely wrong on your end. Set up a local test-server, and verify that MobArena works before claiming that it doesn't. When you have verified that MobArena does indeed work, you can start adding other plugins and settings until something conflicts.

    Disable other plugins.
The first thing you need to do is disable all other plugins. If you can't reproduce the bug with other plugins disabled, you know that you have a conflicting plugin. Now perform a binary search on the other plugins, or if you don't know how to do that, just add a couple of plugins back to the plugins-folder, try to reproduce the bug, and if you can't, the conflicting plugin must be in the remaining set of plugins.

    Write down reproduction steps.
Figure out the exact steps to reproduce/trigger the bug. I need precise steps, and as much information as possible, because there are often many things that could be going on. An example of reproduction steps could be:
    1. Type /ma join
    2. Punch the Archer class sign
    3. Wait for someone else to join
    4. Punch the iron block
    5. Type /ma leave before the other player picks a class

    Check the console window/server.log
Make sure you check the server.log file for any MobArena errors or exceptions. If you find any, copy the ENTIRE exception (including all the lines that say "at com.garbagemule.MobArena...") and paste it (with the other information) in a CODE-tag here in the thread.

    Donations:
I develop MobArena for the fun of it and the positive feedback is all it takes to make me happy, but a few people have asked for a link, so if you're one of them, here's a link: Donate - You can donate as much as you want, even down to a few cents! If I get enough donations, I will spend the money on an extra Minecraft account to aid me in developing/testing/debugging MobArena :)

    Changelog:

    Version 0.94.3.24
    • Updated for CB 1337.
    • The repair-delay node is now unused! The reason for this is that it is now possible (with the release of 1317) to cancel block damage in explosions, and still retain the animation and sound! This also means that arenas should be fully pistons-compatible (for arenas that don't use soft-restore or force-restore)! I'm hoping to see some screenshots and videos of shifting arenas! :)
    • You can now right-click signs in the lobby! I finally found a super easy solution to the improperly updating inventory issue with right-clicking class signs. The result is that players can now left- or right-click as they please. This should solve all issues related to players not being able to choose classes, due to spawn region and WorldGuard/Factions/whatever conflicts.
    • It is no longer possible to warp out of the lobby.
    • New per-arena setting: final-wave - Allows for setting a final wave, meaning on that wave, the arena will end, regardless of how many players are alive.
    Version 0.94.3.11 (open)

    • v0.94.3.11 - Updated Register, built against CB 1240.
    • v0.94.3.8 - Added basic leaderboards.
    • v0.94.3.6 - Fixed MagicSpells support - MobArena no longer supports MagicSpells pre-v1.1!
    • v0.94.3.5 - Fixed a bunch of bugs introduced with CB 1185, as well as a couple of minor MobArena bugs.
    • Updated for CraftBukkit #1185
    • Updated economy support (now supports iConomy 6).
    • Added the three new mob types, Enderman/Endermen, CaveSpider/CaveSpiders, Silverfish. They can be used just like the other mob types in the waves.
    • Endermen cannot pick up arena blocks (this is why).
    • Endermen cannot place blocks in arena regions.
    • The per-class permission syntax has been fixed and changed slightly. The Wiki has been updated (clicky).
    • Fixed MagicSpells issues.
    Version 0.94.2 (open)

    • Redstone circuits now work properly in arenas.
    • Lightning now properly strikes on spawnpoints on special waves.
    • Fixed an issue where players somehow warping/cheating out of the arena world get kicked from the server when discovered.
    • Added MagicSpells support. Use the magicspells.yml file to ban certain spells from the arena either for the whole session, or only during boss waves.
    • Fixed the Heroes death conflict. MobArena and Heroes should now play nice together. Further Heroes support is planned for upcoming releases.
    • [COLOR=#1000000]MobArena will no longer support the discontinued Permissions 2.x and 3.x permission systems.[/COLOR] Recommended permissions systems include PermissionsBukkit (defacto standard) or PermissionsEX.
    Version 0.94.1 (open)

    • Added two new boss abilities: 'shuffle-positions' and 'flood'. Try them out!
    • Players disconnecting/crashing during an arena session no longer get corrupted data files due to economy rewards.
    • Weapon durability is now correctly set to "unlimited".
    • Item sub-types (cocoa beans, bonemeal, colored wool, etc.) now work again.
    • Players can no longer join the arena without first picking a class.
    • MobArena now works with spawn-monsters=false again.
    Version 0.94 (open)

    • Completely revamped the waves system! Undeniably the biggest feature in MobArena since multiple arenas in v0.92, the new customizable waves are guaranteed to bring much more awesomeness to your MobArenas. The waves system brings two new wave types, swarm waves and boss waves. The latter is a very elaborate feature, and the whole waves system has been given its own page on the Wiki. Note: MobArena will ignore all old wave settings, but use sane defaults.
    • Revamped the logging system. Instead of logging: true, you can now use logging: yml/xml. The logging system will now keep track of the last session only, but also maintain a collection of 'totals' for each arena. The idea behind these easy-to-parse files is making the stats available on server web pages.
    • Added SuperPerms/PermissionsBukkit support. Note that specifying mobarena.arenas.* and mobarena.classes.* probably won't work, but these nodes are given to everyone by default.
    • Added Spout support. Currently, the only Spouty thing MobArena does is print (some) announcements as notifications/achievements. This should limit the amount of "chat spam" that MobArena produces. Other Spout-features are planned, but don't expect something crazy. Note that MobArena does NOT require Spout!
    • Monsters will no longer target pet wolves. This is a major nerf to pet classes, but they were very overpowered as it was.
    • Fixed item amounts greater than 64 sometimes bugging out. You should now be able to put arrow:1024 for your Archer classes :)
    • Fixed players losing their stored items and/or earned rewards upon disconnecting from the arena.
    • Fixed blocks not restoring when burned by fire.
    • Fixed an issue with entry fees. They should no longer cause any problems.
    • Fixed slimes. That's right! Slimes that spawn as a result of bigger slimes splitting upon death are now considered arena monsters. This also means that Slimes no longer drop slime balls; as intended.
    • Revamped the repairing algorithm. It is now MUCH more sophisticated, and is capable of repairing not only signs and containers, but also torches, doors and beds. Redstone -should- repair properly as well, but it is still slightly buggy.
    • Added support for restorable containers. Registered chests, dispensers, and furnaces will have their contents stored upon arena start, and restored at arena end. This is useful for providing the arena players with chests with e.g. upgrades or food.
    • Added new commands (for the feature above) - /ma addcontainer <name>, /ma delcontainer <name>, /ma containers. These commands work much like the the spawnpoint commands. To add a container, simply look at the container and type /ma addcontainer <name>.

Thanks again. My arena is one main level, with some corridors down below (like a basement hallway), and some things to climb on the main level. Sounds like if I keep the maximum y value of the arena within +/-9 from the main level, I'll be OK. I can place all the spawnpoints on the main level, then add a couple downstairs for variety.

Now that I understand all this better, I have another suggestion regarding the "Spawnpoints of arena 'x' may be too far apart!" message. Since you say the message is issued when a player is standing in a spot that is not covered by any spawnpoint, I suggest that you add the coordinates of the player. That will allow the arena designer/admin to add a spawnpoint(s) to cover the missing area.

Thanks again for a great plugin. Someone told me this would take 2 minutes to set up, but it seems a little more complicated to do it right! Now if only the "thunder chicken" would stop killing me!

HerobrineLivesHere - Minecraft does not have NPCs outside of the villagers. Now, I know what you meant to ask, i.e. "can you please add support for plugins like Citizens", but the answer is no. You probably don't really care about why, so I'll spare you the details.

..and would it be possible to broadcast a message when a arena ends?

    This is from the wiki:
As for the broadcasting on end, that's not currently a built in feature as far as I'm aware.

I have pvp-enabled: false , but players can still poison each other. Any way to prevent that?

An unrelated suggestion: Use color-coding on the scoreboard to indicate which players have died or left the arena.

Hey Garbagemule, great mod! Put it on my server today and me and a couple friends of mine had a blast.

So, thank you first and foremost.

Secondly, is there a way to give enchanted weapons/armor as a reward? Special blocks like chiseled sandstone or cracked stone brick? Any possibility of utilizing the ID #s vs the names? Since Chiseled Sandstone 1 and Chiseled Sandstone 2 are both coming up as (sandstone_chiseled)?

OK, found what I consider to be a bug... If you hop from arena to arena, you then have to '/ma leave' multiple times to get your original gamemode and inventory back. You even end up bouncing between the spectator areas. For example:
    1. /ma j arena1
    2. Play the game to completions (end up in spectator area)
    3. /ma j arena2
    4. Play the game to completions (end up in spectator area)
    5. /ma j arena3
    6. Play the game to completions (end up in spectator area)
    7. /ma leave - does not get your location, gm or inventory back!
    8. /ma leave
    9. /ma leave - restores original location, gm, and inventory

garbagemule: That was a duh moment... I read everything except that. I re-read one of the pages and saw that you could do the item numbers as well, the FAQ was very useful for the enchanted items thing.

I am however trying to figure out how I can give the various skulls and or a Nether Star... I don't seem to be getting those. It says "Could not add null reward. Please check the config." in the console...? Please see the rewards code below.

    Code:
            rewards:
                waves:
                    every:
                        '3': gold_ingot:5, iron_ingot:5, feather:5,
                        '5': lapis_block, sponge:5, emerald
                        '10': gold_ingot:10, diamond, 397, 2256, 2257, 2258, 2259, 2260, 2261, 2262, 2263, 2264, 2265, 2266, 2267
                        '20': 397:1:1
                    after:
                        '7': iron_sword, iron_pickaxe, iron_axe, 302, 303, 304, 305
                        '13': diamond_sword 16:5;19:2;20:2, diamond_pick, diamond_axe, emerald_block, 397:2:1, 310, 311, 312, 313
                        '16': diamond_block, ender_chest
                        '20': 397:1:1
                        '25': 397:2:1
                        '30': 399
EDIT: Got it figured out... I just did 397 to see what would come up and it was Skull_Item. I just used "skull_item:2:1" to denote Zombie Head, qty:1. :)

Bobcat00 Definitely a bug. I'll look into it after exams. Thanks.

sniperdoc The error you're experiencing is a result of the snakeyaml parser interpreting 397:2:1 as a number (which it then rewrites) rather than a string of characters, and when MobArena then asks for a string, it gets nothing and reports a null reward. This is something that will be a non-issue in 1.0, as I have written a custom, specialized parser that allows this kind of notation.

garbagemule: I'm really loving this plugin btw... all my players are really enjoying the game more because of the rewards I'm able to hand out. Some items that are virtually impossible to make or find are now a little easier to get, thereby allowing them to make a few things that would be very rare... so thanks again.

I do have a question though... and maybe painting a picture of what we're trying to do might help.

A friend of mine and myself are in the process of making multi-level dungeons. We're wanting to include command blocks to warp people to different locations within these dungeons or maybe even warp them out of the dungeon. Is there a way that individual arenas can be set to:

    1. Not give any reward(s) if you got killed? Upon death you would be either warped to a prison cell or just respawned at your bed or wherever you started the arena from? Maybe have some XP levels siphoned?
    2. Allow a player to use a command block (button, pressure plate) to "properly leave the arena" thereby issuing the player a specified reward or just give them whatever rewards were set for the waves in the config. Optimally I'd prefer to do a specific reward, i.e. player receives a Nether Star for completing XYZ dungeon. (I believe this can just be done with command blocks actually?)
I guess I have to test whether I can restrict the /ma join or leave command using permissions, but allow a user to press a command block to issue those specific commands? Maybe you can answer this already?

EDIT: I did a little bit of testing and found that Bukkit/MobArena throws up errors when attempting to run "/ma join." So, joining an arena via a command block is a no-go. Leaving an arena via a command block is probably equally a no-go then...?

    sniperdoc:

I'm not part of the dev team, but I help run a pretty large server that heavily uses MobArena and I can certainly tell you that joining with a command block will not work! Command blocks run commands on the console, not through the player, so it receives no player to join. I recommend using a plugin like ServerSigns if you want to right click to enter and exit - or you could request a custom plugin if you really want to use buttons and pressure plates.

If you use something like ServerSigns for leaving, I believe they should still get their rewards you set in your config once they leave (although I've only personally tested with dying in and completing arenas). Unfortunately, I can't think of a way to add a reward with a right click (as opposed to on a wave, which MobArena's config already does) without taking apart MobArena and building your own plugin that uses MobArena's classes! Think about it this way: the rewards are being added to the stored player inventories, not the current player inventories, so you'd have to find a way to add it to that inventory that's stored within MobArena.

Honestly, MobArena probably isn't what you're looking for for dungeons - it's more like an event that could pop up from going down a hole in a dungeon level where you have to survive as long as you can to gain gear. There's no physical end location of a MobArena, only time and waves.

That being said, there's a rather interesting thing you could do: allow them to walk out. If your arena's protected area doesn't extend to the end of a passageway (or into some sort of a portal), they will be ejected from the arena as soon as they step out, going back to their old inventories and locations. You can always cover areas that stick out by using something like WorldGuard.

sniperdoc Just going to echo/correct a few of Hedgehog's points.
    • There's (currently) no command in MobArena that allows you to force a player to join an arena, so command blocks will not work. ServerSigns is a frequent topic in the IRC and seems to be the way to go if you want to eliminate all commands.
    • Rewards are accumulated in lists in memory, which are then added to the player inventories upon players leaving arenas. What you could do is leave out the 'every'-branch (MobArena might complain if it can't find any rewards, so just set something like '10000': stone, which will never happen anyway), and just populate the 'after'-branch with wave numbers AFTER what you want to be the final wave. Assume a final boss spawns at wave 30; you would then set final-wave to e.g. 35, and then make waves 31-35 supply waves or something easy. You could then set rewards like this: 31 = diamond boots, 32 = diamond helmet, 33 = diamond leggings, 34 = diamond chestplate, and 35 = diamond sword. This way, players who beat the final boss at level 30 will get a full diamond armor and weapon set by finishing up the easy waves at the end, and players who died before the boss will get nothing.
    • MobArena is not currently "dungeon-friendly", because it is designed to be what the name suggests it is (that said, many server owners over the years have shown me interesting and creative ways to make dungeon-like setups, so maybe you could come up with something). However, in the mythical MobArena 1.0, there will be 'linked' arenas, 'morphing' arenas and 'blocking' arenas, along with a lot more radical customizability concerning mobs and game modes. I'll be a real tease and not explain what these arena types/features will actually do, but let your imagination go wild ;) Some say, however, that MobArena 1.0 is a lie. Only time will tell if they're right!
