Experiment - Remove All Diamond Ore

I would like to create a new world for use on my server. 2000 x 2000 in size. I want to replace all diamond ore with iron ore. World edit can't handle it, but I can't find a good alternative. If I do it with worldedit I'd have to break the world into several grids and replacenear 56 15, but this is time consuming and somewhat imperfect. Does anyone have any ideas?

 

Perhaps you could handle the onChunkLoad event. When a chunk is loaded, search for diamond ore and replace it with iron ore. You may need to track which chunks have been searched to prevent a duplication of effort as chunks are unloaded and later reloaded. This is an optimization, though. And obviously, per your description, you would need to make this entire process configurable on a per-world basis.
