I'm not sure if this is due to MineCraft itself but it only started happening to players once I installed bukkit. I have the newest version of CraftBukkit. I have to delete their .dat file in order for them to login.
Are you using the general plugin with motd? we hade the same problem with the "+dname" once we removed that it stoped crashing players at login
