Death Messages disabled?

Hello!
In the essentials config file I have death messages: true
in the config file. I have DeathMessages the plugin handling the messages.
When someone dies though the message never displays. I then disabled death messages in the essentials config to see if the death messages plugin would take over, but the failed to work too.
