API for former player names?

    Does Bukkit or Essentials provide an API for getting the former names used by a player? I have a customized version of the Essentials /seen command and I'd like to add the former names, if possible.

    No. The /seen command only refers to the last login.
    But there was a plugin request lately for exactly this feature: Previous Names
    So check it out. Perharps it's what you need.

    I had a player who just changed his name come on my server yesterday, and the chat (but not the log) showed both his new and old names. Was the old name printed by CraftBukkit or by Essentials? I'm looking for the code that did that.

    EDIT: This plugin seems to do a real-time lookup via Mojang's servers:
