It only opens up a route for attack that only people from minecraft might use to give your computer a virus, if you use a port like 25500 or something not the default only people on your server will know that you have that port open unless then tell someone, in other words, not too risky, if you were to get hacked it probably would already have happened and they would have done it through a port that is open by default. So there is a small risk in it but not too big.

Sorry if that was a little confusing

so if i am going to forward a port dont use the default 25565 one and go with a different gaming port?

there is little to no danger in opening port 25545. there starts to become a risk if you open SSH and FTP ports like 21 and 22...

so it would be better to open 25545 then 25565 or about the same?

You have to have the IP blank and the port set to something like the 25545

Was wondering is it as easy as changing the port in the properties file and that port being the one that works on your computer instead of the 25565? I ask this because my firewall and I do not want to pull the whole firewall down.

If you enter Port 8888 in server properties it only works if they do this: yourip:8888. If they just enter your IP it won't work because the default port is set to 25565, so Minecraft thinks its yourip.25565 but that isn't portforwarded so they can't join. So if you open port 8888 and want players to join you'll have to portforward port 8888 and connect to your server by yourip:8888.
