I was thinking of a plugin that could ban username, IP and MAC address. This would make getting around bans much more difficult considering that computer could not be used on the server again. Possible? I'm not very good with developing but If anyone wants to take this up or tell me how I would go about doing this it would be much appreciated.
I don't think you can get a MAC address plus it would be an invasion of privacy by the plugin maker. Banning an IP is good enough.
banning a MAC address is as effective as banning a single IP (ie not at all), as it can be easily spoofed
Its Data that is sent over the Network as part of a packet, it is publicly available data this is true, it can be spoofed. but i know of very few people who know how to do this, and i don't even think anyone would immediately think of an Mac ban, probably just moving on to another server.
Right, it is sent over the network, or more specifically ethernet. And is only known to other clients in your network segment. As soon as you reach a router that works on the IP level, your mac is lost, as the redirected packet will have the router's mac address, but even that is only the case if the other network the router is connecting to uses ethernet. There is no way for a server on the internet to know your mac address.
Well, it really isn't a invasion of privacy at all. If the MAC address is displayed, who is to say we cannot use it to ban it? I am not sure personally if MAC is displayed but if it is I think it would be a great ban idea.
