Set up BigBrother or similar logging plugin. Build a spawn town, but do not protect it. Ask every newcomer to read the rules (in the MOTD), making it clear that griefing is not allowed. Then, get a plugin to hide /plugins. Finally, let people in and after some grief occurs use the logging plugin to find out who did it and ban them. The point is to make the server look extremely easy to get away with stuff like griefing on and trap griefers that way. Just an idea. :p

It's called a honeypot. Good luck with it!

I purposefully leave my entire spawn area unprotected solely for this reason.

I think this is smart. I might unprotect my spawn area now. With World Edit it's a breeze to clear up my spawn area, hurray //restore.

Of course I'm serious. I've already caught and banned several losers this way, and any severe damage can be undone instantly with LogBlock. I really have nothing to lose here. A few times per day, I will stand in the direct center of the spawn area and do an /lb area 110. If I notice any problems, I simply fix them and then confront the perp. Easy.

I don't agree with this. Why not just protect your server properly including spawn so that when someone does log on with the intention to grief, they can't, get bored and leave.

On my server I have 5-8 Moderators on during the busy hours (evenings and weekends) and everything is protected either with World Guard (spawn) or Self protections done by the members with Towny.

When someone new logs on they are Default so they can't do anything at all. (good in case no moderators are on) So then the moderator does a /lookup and they pass the check they get membered and then followed around by the mod while invisible for a bit etc...

I dunno, your way sounds to confrontational off the bat. I'd rather keep it peaceful and give everyone a chance to prove themselves.

My server is protected properly. Probably a hell of a lot more properly than most.

I also do the looking up, the invisible following, and the build=false Guest mode, etc. I just have a very low tolerance for kids and their bullshit. If somebody logs on with the intention of griefing, I want to know as soon as possible. Our spawn is rather extravagant looking and makes an enticing target. People who grief have to tendency to reveal themselves there and I can then give them a global ban on MCBans to help others be aware of the person's true nature.

If they didn't grief at spawn, they would do it somewhere else eventually, and it would be harder to find. Having spawn unprotected acts as an attractant to keep things at least somewhat centralized and easily detectable.

I guess it all just depends on how you look at it. What you call confrontational I call proactive.

But if they KNOW you have lb or bb they will realise this is not a good server to greif

I have all of my anti-griefing plugins hidden to lull them into a false sense of security.

I tried the 'protect everything with uncounteble WE regions' method months ago, its insane how much work and management that gives you. Your 5-8 moderators should be able to have fun and actually play the game.

Logblock lets us catch, undo, and ban any grief (I dont actually call it grief anymore).
Rendering griefers obsolete and more a source of amusement (the 'look at that pathetic attempt at being a poor fool without any ability to enjoy themselves without hurting others' kind of amusement).

Combining this method with MCBans or CommunityBans also helps other server admins.
I dont use any of those plugins though, I believe in second chances and hope that those kids might grow up and acquire some wisdom.

Another point, I prefer my users to experience MC in its full 'free to go and build anywhere' form, locking everything down with regions would ruin the entire MC thing for me.

I agree. The only area's I lock down with World Guard are the Main Spawns and the area around spawn so people don't make it ugly lol... Everything else on the server is self protected by the users using towny and that is only an option. People are free to build and go where they want. Everyone knows that everything can be fixed with LogBlock

On a funnier side note - the only thing in the game that can't be fixed by LogBlock is an abillity given to Admins called Vulcan Mode or Vulcan Punch (this is done by the AdminCmd Plugin)

I made the mistake of playing around with it out in the wild and then forgetting to turn it off and going back to spawn and taking a massive chunk out of it.... at that point you have to manually rebuilt it but with WE, it takes 2 min

I had the same with superpicks, the WE superpick is not logged, luckely the maker of Logblock also released a smal plugin called 'Superpickaxe' (very original :p) that intercepts the WE // command and does tie in with any logging plugin.

I believe they have the right to buy a new copy of minecraft and not act like a dilweed this time. =)
