    Edit:
i just relised the connection is horrible, have a wireless connection but i made it wired in hope that it would boost the speed. Sometimes i get 5 Mb/s download. but sometimes it falls [IMG]

    im now getting 0.84 upload

Yep, it seems like your connection speed isn't suitable for running a server. I run a server on my iMac as well and it'll run lagless with at least ten, if not more. If you can't get a faster internet, and I don't know how your internet is set up, but things you could do to speed it up are this:
    • Check your router, and consider replacing it. If your router is more than four or five years old, it can really slow things up.
    • If at all possible do NOT play Minecraft (The user-end client, I mean) on the same machine as you run the server on. Sometimes you can get away with it, but it causes lag like crazy. Even if your connection speed is the issue, keeping processing requirements down will help.
    • Uninstall any unnecessary plugins that you're running, and especially disable other worlds/the nether if you're running those, since they cause more lag. More data and things for other users to access from off-network means more data that has to get through your connection.

Your ping seems relatively high for less than 30 miles from you - I'd suggest you contact AT&T / SBC Yahoo for them to double check your connection is working properly, wired right, etc.
It appears that you are on the AT&T "DSL Direct Express" package (based from your speeds) - you may consider upgrading to a higher package or switching service completely. You may also host your server professionally with some sort of game servers site, or buying a small VPS (Xen powered, of course).
Basically, check with AT&T and make sure your internet is haven't intermittent connectivity issues, upgrade your DSL plan, or buy a small VPS / host off of a minecraft game server host (some providers have plans starting from $8 / month)

Just to see, could you run a speedtest here and tell me what you get? This includes only download and upload.

thanks for your reply, i have the AT&T U-Verse Elite package.

here are my speed tests, running and not running the server...

It's your upload speed. You should allow about .25mbit per player to have a stable condition.

    This.

Your server is certainly taking up a bit of bandwidth, as expected. I host my own server off of a 1Gbit line in Arizona (averaging a consistent 1.70 Mbit/s) with about 10-15 players playing at any one time. That's at least 0.12 Mbit/sec. You'd need a 1.20 Mbit/s upload. Uverse Max provides that, but I still think (as far as expansion goes) you should rent a server from someone. It'd be cheaper than upgrading your internet, knowing AT&T...

While monitoring my network activity when I had my server running from my home connection; sometimes during minecart rides it would spike upwards to 60-70kb/s (~0.5-0.6mbit) PER user.

Download bandwidth really doesn't matter, it's all about maintaining the upload.
