Ok, well I just made a server using bukkit (my first minecraft server). My guy could get in and run around, but even though I put his name down under "op" he couldn't use commands or anything. I then banned him for the heck of it but couldn't find an "unban" command on console. I went to the folder again and took his name off both the banned and op list but he was still banned. So basically whatever I do in the folder has no effect on the server? I would like to know the solution to this as well as things like how to make ranks and give ranks permissions etc. I also installed a plugin which I placed in the plugin folder. It, just live everything else, had no effect on the server. Any help would be appreciated, thanks.

EDIT: I restarted the server and my player was unbanned, but even though I made him an op he could still not use commands. I would say /help but nothing would show up. The plugin I added did load and works for console though. Things I want to know:

    1. How to add ranks/give ranks commands
    2. How to make a whitelist? Is that a plugin somewhere?
    3. If I did something wrong.. I used a premade version because I could get my folder to work properly
    4. How to do all those features like change rank colors and stuff (are those additional plugins too?)

If I read the post right, you didn't restart the server to install the plugin... Make sure that after installing the plugin you restart the server :)

    To answer your questions;

You can give ranks with the permissions plugin:

The whitelist question is answered above

Most things that you change require that you restart the server, this is so it reloads the changes. For example, just change the port in the server.properties file wont change the port until you restart the server.

You can change rank colours with the previously mentioned permissions plugin

Okay, thanks, but why can't my player use commands in game? How do I allow him to use commands, even simple ones like /help?

    About /help as i know it doesn'd work ...

If you like to execute console commads within the game you need write /#command ...

To execute commands that are in MineCraft by default, use /# rather than just /

To get other commands working, I recommend you install the essentials plugin and the permissions plugin.

so then the permissions plugin allows me to assign what commands I want what rank to be able to use?

Ok thanks... I still have the feeling somethings going wrong. I don't have the time to do any server stuff at the moment but I will later tonight.

Did you install the permissions plugin? If so, what do you wish to achieve with it? I am happy to help you configure it :)

Oh right, my IP isn't static which can cause some problems. I heard about some solutions like "DNS" (whatever the heck that is), but I don't know how to use any of them. In classic it wasnt too much of a problem, because I just needed to change my IP that I set in port forwarding and it would work, but here the player needs to know the new IP as well which can be a pain.

EDIT: and no, as I said I don't have the time right now but I will later tonight. Thanks a bunch for your help!

    DNS - Domain Name System.

Go to dyndns.org and you can set up your own dynamic DNS. Giving out your IP every time it changes may be easier for you though.

wait, so should I enter my current IP in (cuz it changes of course) or like my routers IP or what?

I'll do my best to help.

Go here. (You do not need to pay them anything. The free account is all you need) I've used them for about 10 years now.
Anyway, pick out a hostname. (For example: idontknowdns.)
Service Type: Host with IP Address.
Enter your IP - the IP you would give anyone who wants to connect to your server.
Download and install the client to auto update your IP when it changes.

Ok, I tried it and made it "lanukcraft.dyndns.org", saved it with my current IP, tried joining the server with that stuff but it didn't work. I then typed in my IP and it worked fine.

EDIT: okay, also, it determines my IP to be something random I have never heard of before. Pretty much every software like this does. Is that because I am on a private network or something?

Where did you get your "current ip" from?

What IP are you expecting? (You can PM it to me if you don't want it on here)

Never mind all, IP problem is fixed. Now I finally have time to go try out commands and plugins and such. I remember going to other servers with the /help or !help and all the command lists and ranks and everything. I have no idea how I am going to transform a completely vanilla server into something like that!

I believe the essentials plugins allows you to configure what is shown in the /help menu. I also believe it will only show commands you have access to... Try it :)

Lanuk - There is lots to learn if you want to get into hosting your own server. It won't be a click of the button, but when you do finally get it setup you're going to feel pretty damn good about yourself.

Don't let the amount of work discourage you. If you really want to host a server, we're hear to help.

When you set it up 20 or more times you get used to it ...

I think I could setup a server while drunk off my ass and skydiving by this point. :p
