Does anyone know what the Status is between Wolv and Mojang on that DMCA stunt he pulled a few months back?

  2. @grid21 Still the same as a few months back.

What are they gonna do about this? When will this crap end?

    It won't. Bukkit is gone.

It involves lots of legal stuff to counter, if you want to try it: be my guest.
Development is gone, if Bukkit was gone then you wouldn't respond here either.

Well I've been using the counter part server jar to run all my servers. I just think Wolv had no business doing what he did. It was purely selfish.

That is a discussion held enough times. So lets not do that again.

I just wanted to know the status of this childish issue. I hope Mojang wins out on him and we get Bukkit back.

@grid21, its too late for that. The damage is done. Bukkit is dead.

Bukkit even did not try to fight back. So sad that non of all the developers showed loyalty.

That is true. No one fought back. That's pretty sad. Also obviously Bukkit isn't dead because we still have Minecraft servers with plugins.

As a lone dev it's hard to fight a company, so it makes total sense to do the only thing a dev can do; DMCA the shit out of your code. Hence, our current status. Nothing Mojang can do about it either, otherwise they would've by now.

  14. What Tim says here is true, in a sense. Death of the development has been gone a long time, and just because of that fact, doesn't mean that the rest of it has to die. But in this case, it mostly has. Bukkit lived and died on its development. Once the decision was made that there's be no Bukkit 1.8, Bukkit was doomed to die out. Development of Minecraft isn't going to stop, and the fickle masses will move on to newer versions, leaving Bukkit behind. I'm not saying that decision was wrong, I understand why it was made, and it was made with the knowledge that death would eventually follow.

Just think - how many servers are actually Bukkit nowadays? More versions will come, and Bukkit will get more and more irrelevant. The only choices for it then are to die in peace (not gonna happen), or die and be resurrected as something it isn't meant to be (which Curse have been doing).

The important factor is that Bukkit is dead or dying. It has no hope of survival. And, blame it though you may, the DMCA was not the cause. It would have happened anyway.

Yes, unlike your actions of course. You need access to CraftBukkit purely for selfless reasons, right?

I'm really starting to wonder who "Bukkit" is in your mind. You know that they all left after stuff happened, right? You didn't miss that? I think you should read back over it all. The only people who are left are Curse, and the people they chose for moderation. The moderators, it's not their place to try and counter the DMCA, nor do I imagine they have the ability to sort out the legal mess. Curse and Mojang, should they be able to sort any of it out, have made it pretty clear through their actions that they can't be bothered to fix Bukkit related issues. Heck, we've been unable to reset our BukkitDev passwords for over a year, and we still have no dl.bukkit.org or JavaDocs for 3 months.

Well, obviously. This will be the case so long as multiplayer Minecraft exists. Bukkit Bukkit and multiplayer Minecraft aren't synonymous. Maybe they are to you, but that's really not the case.

You guys complain about the DMCA, and announce the actions of Wolvereness as selfish, without any attempt at all to get to know or understand the person behind the claim. Maybe he'd resist such attempts, especially if a whole bunch of people tried to question him on his actions all at once, people who don't actually care and just want to get what they want. I know I would. But I'll bet neither of you, nor the vast majority of the people who complain about the DMCA have made no attempt. Instead, they just moan about how their toys have been taken away, and then go off and circumvent his wishes anyway. Take a look at your actions from an outside perspective - my perspective if you want - and see who is really the selfish one here.

I still haven't figured out what Mr. Wolfe is "fighting". And Microsoft/Mojang doesn't care about third-party servers at all, so they're going to do anything even if they can.

At least we have Spigot to run servers.

He's basically fighting Mojang not being in control of the code he wrote. Long story short, I think this is pretty accurate :p

Pulling a DMCA request on code that was meant to be public, even if it broke some sort of BS Copyright, is wrong. What he did was inconsiderate of everyone else who put time into bukkit as they never even had a say. He took down a community with a single email.

I agree. Over 100,000 server owners who did nothing wrong were affected.

@Bobcat00 Volcanoes explode and kill people sometimes. Those people don't have to do anything wrong for that to happen. This is a terrible analogy just to say that it doesn't really matter, what happened happened.
@MrAwellstein (just to tag both of you) There have been billions of posts like the three before this. I'm actually surprised this thread was even made. I think people should just be happy that others have accepted the challenge of finding a way to replace CraftBukkit with a new server mod, and even more happy that Spigot has their own CB build that, although a lot less stable, still runs Bukkit plugins. (I am aware, however, that their build tends to screw up NMS-based plugins.)

Edit: Granted I'm being a little hypocritical by stating my opinion and thus contributing to the same topic, but I have a new solution: let's stop posting on this thread. :D

But volcanoes aren't under humans control, this completely was.

@nverdier True. I did say it was a bad analogy. :p

My point was that it wasn't under our control. Perhaps it's not fair for the community, but there's nothing to do about it except what's being done, and that's make new mods.

@nverdier Yeah, that is true... This next question is not rhetorical, I actually don't know the answer: How long did that period of effect last? I guess I didn't keep track of time very well during that time span.

The effect on the server owners kind of ended when Spigot's CB build came out, at least for those who didn't give a darn toward the legal iffiness. Before that build came out, I don't think it killed people to use 1.7.9, and I personally think it's just a stupid idea to use a protocol hack instead of staying downgraded. And we all still have things like Trident and Sponge to look forward to.

I lost a lot of players (who never came back) due to the delay in getting CB 1.8. Most players run the latest client and don't switch profiles.

@Bobcat00 Mm. I suppose I should have mentioned this sooner, but my opinions are fairly biased/ignorant. I just happened to shut down my server a week after the DMCA struck, too soon for me to have any idea what was going on or what a DMCA even was--I just thought the download site was having some issues. Anyway, this is to say that I wasn't very affected by the DMCA; what I've said about server owners is mainly based upon what I would have done if my server was running in that time.

But still, almost redundantly, at this point nothing can be changed about it. I may have no right to be so careless about it, but it's what it is.

  30. You seem to forgot that Bukkit was dead before Wolv did anything. EvilSeph announced the team's decision to stop Bukkit development. Mojang decided it was time to simply steal Bukkit. Wolv had the balls to say no to that multi-billion dollars company. And it worked. End of story.

Bukkit was killed by Mojang during Eula drama, when they clearly specified that nothing has ever been acknowledged by them. CraftBukkit was then in a grey area, and it wasn't worth the time spent working on it for free.

In the end, Bukkit started to have a hard time updating and the (few) API flaws slowly appeared. It was time to start again from scratch.
