It's time to kick the bukkit

  1. The time has come to say goodbye to Bukkit, and Minecraft in general. Both have massively changed my life for the past ~3 years. It’s with a heavy heart that I close this amazing chapter in my life. I remember when my friends introduced me to Minecraft for the first time. God I hated that game but after a while I really started to like it. Everything changed when we started to use Bukkit. Running a small Bukkit server was great. We loved the idea that you could just drag ‘n drop a little file in the Plugins folder and there it is, a new in-game feature.

Then came the moment my friends and I started to write some basic Programs in batch. (yeah I know..) Soon we wanted to go further than that, and create bigger, better things. Then came the moment we decided to give Bukkit Plugin development a try. I absolutely was the worst developer ever. Many people here hate the people who learn java trough the bukkit API and say that it’s impossible to ever become a good developer if you do it this way. Well, to be honest, this is exactly how I learned Java. It all started when I watched a tutorial (exploding arrows) by Jacek aka BetterPhP on youtube, I basically copied the code and changed some stuff, I knew that this was not something I could call “My creation” but I was still so proud of it when it turned out to be working. This is the only tutorial I’ve ever watched, a few months/almost a year later I bought a book about Java, which I never finished.

Anyways, at a specific moment everything started to make sense. I actually started to understand how Java and programming in general works. It’s around that time that I started to hang around on IRC. A month or so later I got nominated to join the special Bukkit+ section on the forums. A few weeks later I got asked if I wanted to become a Bukkit-Dev staff. I was so happy they asked me to join their team, so I did and I quite enjoyed working so closely with the team.

I never thought I would be put in this position; the position where I actually feel like it’s time to say goodbye. Goodbye to Bukkit and Minecraft. Believe me; if I said that a few months ago, I would not have been able to do this. To leave Bukkit and the team. However, everything has changed and I actually feel okay with it now.

I really loved my work as a DBO-Staff. I’ve met amazing people during my journey. However in the light of the recent events, I do no longer have the strength nor the motivation to continue my work as a DevBukkit-Staff. As of today, I’m resigning from BukkitDev. The attitude of specific individuals towards Bukkit and its staff members, the fact that all this time I’ve been pouring energy into a project that is owned by a multi-million dollar company benefitting from the free labour and the fact that they do not seem to care about us at all has fortified my decision, eliminating any remaining doubts of resignation.

I would like to thank EvilSeph, TnT and mbaxter for running everything so smoothly. Those guys deserve a medal for their work and I support every decision they've made. I would also like to thank the entire BukkitDev-Staff-Team for their work and support. I would like to say thanks to all the people who have contributed to Bukkit. There are more people working on Bukkit than one might expect. There are hundreds of individuals who are passionate about it and contribute to it on a daily basis.

I would also like to thank a few other people.

First I would like to say thank you to DSH105 for being such an amazing friend. We have worked on quite a few plugins together and spend many hours on IRC talking. Thanks buddy.

JOPHESTUS for being an amazing friend. It's always a pleasure talking to him on IRC. Thanks for being such a great friend JOPH.

My mentor, obnoxint. He was always there for me whenever I needed him.

My british friends, lol768 and Hoolean because they are both some of the coolest people I’ve ever met.

hawkfalcon because he’s been there for me from the beginning. Thanks for everything hawkie.

drtshock because he was one of the first people who talked to me on IRC and nominated me for Bukkit+. Thanks drtshock.

I would also like to thank Lolmewn who has been a great friend and queue-slayer buddy. Thanks lolmewn.

My Team-Lead, slipcor, together we have achieved so much and we’ve spent countless hours clearing the huge queue. I’m glad I can call him a friend.

This is where the story comes to an end. I'm glad I've had the chance to be a part of such an amazing project and it's community. Goodbye everyone. Goodbye, Bukkit. And who knows? Maybe you’ll spot me somewhere else in the future. ‘till then, goodbye.
