    Hey Minecrafters,

    ======= update =======
    Thanks to the new development in the whole case the petition is temporary cancelled
    =====================

    Since Bukkit just told that they are going to stop the project I started a petition to ask Mojang to keep the project alive.

    So, you're making a petition to demand something, that is already happening? ;)

    Mojang already stated that they
    a) own Bukkit
    b) will make sure, that Bukkit is continued (at least for 1.8)

    They can't own Bukkit. Github currently states a list of 106 contributors which all own a part of Bukkit. Without the permission of everyone else they own only the parts where the contributors gave them permission for. Morang is currently doing massive copyright infringement. I hope a few of these will take this to court because it undermines the open source community in a massive way.

    So no, no one should sign this. Mojang is stealing intellectual property of many developers that spend their free time to improve a public piece of software. And they will make money with it for sure. I can tell you right now that in a few month you will see a Mojang version of Bukkit that enforces the EULA and is not Free Software. There is no benefit for anyone but Mojang. As a developer in particular, you should make a clear statement that you do not accept if someones tries to use your work in a way you did not gave him permission for. You should not support nor accept it.

    Mojang owns bukkit, but if all the people currently running bukkit leave then the soul of this project is over and the era of the good days has come to an end. EULA that Mojang wants to enforce is destroying the minecraft world we live in today. If bukkit and its staff leave and Mojang continues the project, then i will be done with minecraft and everything associated. The good days are coming to an end.

    Mojang isn't changing the rules of distribution nor the license. Basically nothing changes, so why do they infringe rights?
    Owning Bukkit doesn't change anything on the license nor the open source nature of the project.

    It's like Android, which is Open Source but also developed by the Open Headset Alliance.
    Only that the product is Bukkit (the API) and the developer is Bukkit.

    Another thing are your forecasts which are against every logic and facts.
    1. Mojang can't change the licence as they want, due to the 106 contributers (maybe they can, due to the fact that Bukkit violates Minecraft's licence...)
    2. Mojang can only benefit if we, the developers, benefit. That's the point of a plugin/modding API

    Simply wrong. They can't change the license of someone else intellectual property. Nuff said

    Oh, than excuse me please, I though with "Another thing are your forecasts which are against every logic and facts." You tried to pick up my argument and call it "against every logic and facts". Misunderstood you there, sorry.

    You definitely don't know what you are talking about, like other people.
    The EULA states that you can earn money from everything you do with your Minecraft server & stuff as long as you don't sell things like kits for real money, as long as you can't get them in any other way.

    This is to prevent Mojang from being spammed by parents which kid just spent $150+ on a server and got banned for no reason.

    Overall, I think Mojang will continue to update Bukkit, atleast until the Plugin API comes out. Mojang is not stupid, they know that every server, apart from the small private vanilla ones, run Bukkit (or something based on Bukkit). They know that by not having an active API, be it Bukkit or the Plugin API, then the MP scene will come to a crashing end. Mineplex, the Chunk, Wynncraft, ArkhamNetwork, all those big players will come crashing down, and with it comes Mojangs revenue stream.

    Mojang will most likely do something highly logical with the end of Bukkit and the dawn of the Plugin API, namely by releasing the Plugin API, and then giving a few months for developers to switch their plugins over, before ending support for Bukkit. At this point, most competent developers would have switched their plugins over to the new API.

    If Mojang really wanted to kill Minecraft off, they would end the modded MP server scene, but they will never do that.

    Acer_Mortem But can we really predict what Mojang will do? No, we can't.
    God knows what they'll do. Enough unpredictable decisions have come out of them already, from the sudden enforcement of the end user license agreement to coming out and saying they own Bukkit after effectively hiding it for 2.5 or 3 years, and then saying they will take over Bukkit's development. They also plan to have their own API, meaning that once said API comes out, they no longer have a need for Bukkit, and will either kill or abandon it. And now that EvilSeph is gone, who will continue it?

    My point being, there are far too many variables at this point to be predicting anything.

    If you read my post thoroughly, you would've noticed that I addressed the release of Mojangs API, and that given time for developers to port over their plugins, Bukkit will have no use to anyone anymore. And Dinnerbone actively stated that he will continue Bukkit in the absence of EvilSeph atleast until 1.8. Chances are it will be for a longer period of time, until the Plugin API comes out.

    Acer_Mortem But again, that's a prediction. A good, well-backed one, but still a prediction. People don't always do what they say, and by the nature of humanity will look out for themselves first.

    You can't purchase Open Source software. That's basically saying that all the modified versions of that open source software like Spigot for example don't belong anymore and have to be shut down. Mojang is pretty much destroying their foundation, their community. With Minecraft, it's likely Mojang would have never existed.

    Yes you can. There's a difference between ownership and copyright. Just because a project is distributed freely and free to make modifications on it that doesn't mean it's public domain (aka everyone OWNS! it). You just have the right to fork, modify and share it. The ownership still remains by the founder/owner and he is allowed to sell the original sourcecode. If he sells it, he doesn't sell all forks or other work based on it, just his own code and the copyright on it.

    Noone is destroying anything. Mojang just left Bukkit alone for almost 2 years. Now with Evilsephs wish to stop dev'ing Bukkit they take over and keep it alive. This means you blame them for continuing the development of bukkit and for killing the community by keeping Bukkit active. Interesting POV.

    As I recall seeing on Twitter, DinnerBone said he would update it for 1.8. But what about after? Can someone explain to me better exactly why the Bukkit team stopped development and what is going to happen now? I'm so confused right now.

    I believe they can own Bukkit as a brand and a domain and website...

    You shouldn't worry about them "stealing code" tho... because they said at Minecon 2012 - The Future of Mod API that they're going to start from scratch.

    Just read what EvilSeph wrote to understand (it has to do with lack of licensing and lack of support:

    I personally don't like that they are adding a modding API. IMHO, leaving as much as possible to the community is the best route. Just make the game. Let the modding community do it their way, rather than getting all involved and trying to replicate what they did.
