SO, Mojang has been working on the modding API for Minecraft. It is supposed to use a plugin-like system just like Bukkit. Because of this, people will probably use it because it is integrated with Minecraft.

So, when it does release, what will happen to Bukkit? Will Bukkit move to the Modding API? Will it die?

Every year Mojang says "we are working on the modding api" and that it will come out eventually this or next year. The last big patch 1.7 obviously changed a lot of the codebase maybe because they moved a lot around.

In any case i do not think that this will have a huge impact on Bukkit since we all do not know what the modding API will look like and what are the requirements to be allowed to mod.

What mojang currently does is preparing for a possible modding API. You can tell that by looking at the changes.

Like adding resource packs, ability to change 3D models, customizeable shaders and so on ...

All this can be used to "mod" but i really doubt that they will have a working solution in the near future.

Even if they release something like a usuable API Bukkit would still be alive since Bukkit is not only "API". The community behind it will not just "vanish" when the modding API is out.

I also do not see why Bukkit will die then since it is possible that the Modding API is just something like "making it easier to modify something like items" or "look and feel of a world". They never told us if they provide real API.

In any case i strongly believe that both projects can co-exist. It will probably be more easier to integrate bukkit and extend the API by then.

It'd be good if the Minecraft API was entirely client sided, and Bukkit servers communicated with it to do graphical things, like new items.

Don't get your hopes up. I'm afraid that's not going to happen.

This is an impossible question to answer. We neither know what the API will look like, or when it will arrive.
