What's that thing at the bottom right of the Java for Dummies: 5th Edition picture?

Where do you guys learn to code?
I have been looking for a certain one thing to use to learn how to code Java, but I can't find it..
What did/do you, the developers of plugins on here, use to learn how to code Java?
Please provide all links possible to help me get started!
I really hope I am not breaking any rules by posting this!

I used a book - Java For Dummies, 5th Edition. I found it very useful for learning Java :). You can buy it on Amazon for ~$20

KraZ__ TheBCBroz isn't the best decision to learn Java from. justinis Your best bet to learn Java is by reading books, and always working with Java, until you decide to learn a new language. Java for dummies 5th edition is how I learned. Almost every book store has a book on Java & every other programming language. Also, taking classes is good. I am taking a class in the summer :p. Hope you get to learn Java and become a good programmer!

KraZ__ I can read, many developers on here say the same thing I said. Many of TheBCBroz tutorials are helpful, but are sometimes outdated, and not the best to learn the language of Java.

Jaaakee224 Personally, I started out going to a camp during the summer for programming when I was like 8 or 9, and came out loving it. The best, and probably only way to practice programming, is to set yourself simple goals that you think you might be able to accomplish, and work towards them. Always push your goals slightly past what you think you have the hang of and you'll steadily get better at it, as long as you have the motivation.

I've often seen complicated programs, and though to myself, 'Damn, that looks complicated. I'll never be able to do that.' And then, within an hour, i'd sit down and power through to the best of my abilities, and come up with something strikingly similar to the program I thought I'd never be able to emulate. It sounds cheesy, but it really is all about the drive and motivation. Working hard enough, you'll easily find that something you just easily breezed through in a minute or two would've taken you days to even contemplate a couple months prior, and it's those moments that really help you to motivate yourself forward.

Maurdekye I do the exact same thing. By the way, the camp I am going to is iDTech. http://www.idtech.com/
Personally, I cannot wait to go to this camp.

Jaaakee224 Hey, that's the same one I went to! Which location?

KraZ__ Well, not even that really. His earlier videos are outdated enough that often they aren't good for learning the Bukkit API at all.

As great as it is to see a blooming friendship, this is mildly off-topic from the thread at hand. While you both have graciously answered the OP's question, don't you think this is a bit out of hand (I may not be in any position to say that, but just my opinion).

  14. My biggest tip, dont go into java thinking you want to code for Minecraft. Learn java, learn the basics of it, learn how it functions, how things go together. Then, start trying to do bukkit plugins. If you just start doing bukkit plugins you are gunna have a hard time.

You need to calm down. What we're trying to say is, don't watch TheBCBroz regardless of your situation.

Wow, I am extremely surprised that this got so much comments.
Thanks so much for all the recommendations and I will be buying the Java for dummies 5th edition book, or whatever it's called. ^_^
Thanks again for your help... Any and all is appreciated still. :3

It's great that you will try a book! If you don't like it, there are countless other options. There are other threads where you can view other people's opinions (both from veterans and from newer developers)!

That is just to name a few - A simple google search can yield lot's of results!

    Grief'd man

I, personally, have just started from the very beginning. I looked up Java tutorials. Went to tons of sites, asked my father who makes a living off of code, ect. What I didn't know I either googled, asked him, or asked the web for answers. So far, two years later, I've gone from n00b to not-so-n00b. I'm quite happy. ^^

Odd.. because you seem to have brought it up again:
Stop telling the OP to go watch those videos. 99% of proficient developers on these forums agree they teach bad habits and are outdated anyway.

Also, you need to apologize to Jaaakee224 or you'll look like a total fool.

I watched YouTube tutorials, made some plugins, simple plugins - which I may add wasn't good enough. I bought "SamsTeachYourself Java" - really good. :)

The_Doctor_123 Thank you for having my back, I appreciate it.

(This Thread is VERY off topic.) Would be best if this was put so solved, or locked.
