Just curious to see when people here learned Java.. I've noticed a lot start off learning Java and the Bukkit API at the same time, but I'm sure there's a handful of you that started Java far before applying it to minecraft.

So just a question to you guys? How were you introduced to programming?

Personally I started during university about 3 years ago as basic Java was compulsory for my course. I only really started when I took an Enterprise Java paper last year and that was when I started looking at coding plugins for CraftBukkkit.

Yeah, I started a year before going into developing Bukkit plugins, pretty much just playing around with the swing library and teaching myself from my textbook. All my practices seemed to pay off well, since learning the Bukkit API after having a firm knowledge of the language was quick and fun.

Started when I found Bukkit, really. Some plugins didn't fit my needs, so I made my own :)

First played with Java when it was in beta in 1995/96 :) It looked like a potentially useful cross-platform toolkit for implementing GUI's in conjunction with a language most people under 40 won't have heard of *cough*COBOL*cough*. That was only a partial success, so my Java experience lapsed for a long while...

I picked it up again about 2 years ago, not coincidentally shortly after I'd purchased Minecraft and learned about Bukkit. Being experienced in C (and less so in C++), Java wasn't much of a leap.

(Hands up who's used the WebRunner aka HotJava browser)
