Hello guys! I hope you will all have or HAD (depending on which date you celebrate christmas) a wonderful christmas.

At the moment I run this server: http://www.hetzner.de/hosting/produkte_rootserver/ex5. The server has Intel® Core™ i7-920 Quad-Core and 24 GB RAM.

I think it shouldn't be any problem to have 90 players online at the same time with these specs, but obviously I am wrong.

I have set a cap of 77 players and still the server are a bit laggy when it reaches 77 players.

    Looking for a new server
Now I am looking for a new server. I think of upgrading to this server: http://www.hetzner.de/hosting/produkte_rootserver/ex10.

Do you guys think that would be a good upgrade and do you think It would be able to handle 100/100 players with these plugins?

Thanks on beforehand for help and replies!

Yeah, well first of all, that CPU is a bit old and cannot support that many players. Secondly, you are most likely being bottle necked by those slow SATA hard drives.

Your next best bet would be the EX4S, which is a 2600K and 32 gigs of RAM and throw an SSD in with it too. That will be pushing it, but should just hold 90 players with a 2600K. Although if you want the guaranteed highest performance, then you should get a 3770K or E3-1245 CPU and an SSD.

    http://www.cpubenchmark.net/cpu.php?cpu=Intel Core i7 920 @ 2.67GHz&id=834
    http://www.cpubenchmark.net/cpu.php?cpu=Intel Core i7-2600K @ 3.40GHz&id=868
    http://www.cpubenchmark.net/cpu.php?cpu=Intel Core i7-3770K @ 3.50GHz

As you can see the i7 920 is pretty old and performance pretty poor, even compared to Sandy Bridge. The 2600K performs far better and the 3770K will guarantee double the performance of your current server CPU.

Finally, don't waste your money on that EX10............it has a 3930K (Sandy Bridge) which performs nearly identical in single-threaded performance as the 2600K. Only difference is that it has two extra cores..

What OS do you guys run to get 90+ players? I have an [email protected] and I can tap about 50 players before lag. I also run an i7-2600k@stock and hit about 65 players before lag, both running the same plugins. Very similar to the list above, but with Booscooldowns and dragontravel added...

Just curious as to what I could be doing different to have such lower caps before lag, and this is all on RAMdisk.

Sorry to hijack thread I am just curious.

But I do agree with NathanC. If you do not have the ability to overclock, then the i7-920 is quite a bit aged. i7-2600 or 2700 will be your best bang for the buck at stock frequencies.

I would recommend CentOS or Debian for hosting servers, because the repo has ancient stable software, unlike ubuntu which has newer software that could be less stable.

So not Windows Server 2008R2 or 2012? :( Have not used Linux in a few years haha

Windows Server is bloated, less efficient on system resources, and has stuff that you don't need (like a GUI) that will prevent using your server's resources to its full potential.

Ahh, I was always hiding under the assumption that with a multi core machine, the extra "bloat" in windows server would not affect the single core being used by MC... :(

It is a common miss conception that minecraft (bukkit) servers only use one core. Yes, the main server thread which is a majority of the server only uses one core, but there are many things that go on other cores (chunk loading, netowking, chat, some plugins, etc)
You can run servers fine on windows. I know rather large servers that use windows server as their os. However, it will run better on something like linux. Personally I prefer to use centos for my servers.

EDIT: i7 2600k is just fin for a server your size. I have personally got over 300 players on one just fine. (I now use Xeon E5's but originally used i7's)

I do know that other plugins and such will utilize other threads. It was my assumption that the bottleneck to a system will be MC's primary thread. Hence the need for single core excellence. Thanks for the heads up on server OS. :) And again, sorry for hijacking this thread.

Guys, I bought a SP3 server from OVH.COM and it is working SO good. Can have 90+ players with the same plugins as before, but with 20 TPS and no lag at all. Amazing.
