PEX is proven to be a bad permissions plugin :(

I advise you use something else!

You sir have not fully explored all of the possibilities of PEX. It is the only permission plugin that offers working MySQL database support. Its a very intricate plugin that takes a lot of skill to completely master.

You sir are wrong. Please read all of our friend mbaxter 's document on why it is bad. I program plugins, so I am more than capable of configuring one :/

It's the only permissions plugin that deadlocks the server on async permission lookups.
It's the only permissions plugin that takes down other plugins when it crashes.
It's the only permissions plugin that has repeatedly broken other plugins, silently blocking messages from arriving on users's screens.
It's the only permissions plugin that has broken essential parts of the permissions system and called it a 'feature.'
It's the only permissions plugin whose author still hasn't fixed known server-crippling bugs for half a year.

PEX has a lot of only's.

These only happen if you do not know how to set it up 100% correctly. I have been using it for over a year now and never had ONE problem with it. I use PermissionsEX in ways that cannot be done by other permission plugins. Never have i had an error with it, like stated before. Yes these are all problems with PermissionsEx IF you're not careful.

You just don't get it. We've found and proven these errors by reading through the raw java source. The fact that you believe you have set it up correctly makes no difference.

None of the issues I described are caused by user error. I appreciate your anecdotal positive experience, but it does not disprove what I have said.

So... We have also used PEX without problems for roughly a year now, but baxter's comments are valid & make me a little worried.

What modern permissions plugin would you guys recommend instead?

limiting yourself to a select part of plugins and features is not called "setting it up correctly"
as of now, the following features in PEX are broken:
long inheritance chains dont return proper permission
you cannot dump SQL to flat file
PEX breaks default: false nodes and gives them to OP anyway
PEX silently breaks on certain correct configuration and returns nulls for permission checks, which causes all plugins to crash while pex shows it self as working correctly.
    and more, that i forgot.

GroupManager (my favorite), Bpermissions, permissionsbukkit and priviliges are all stable and have features up to par.

You can dump from SQL to flat file, just did that yesterday to edit the rank names. Never had an inheritance problem in my life using this. Trust me i use almost all of the functions this plugin brings and have never had a problem.

I only had all these problems after the 1.4.6 update, before that is fine a year or so...

yet people scream in IRC about PEX SQL dump saying "SQL dump is currently broken!" while others have issues with long inheritance chains, even though the file is completely valid.

He re-added SQL to flat file in his 1.4.6 dev build. Thats how i was able to use it. Also these long inheritance chains are when people accidentally have two ranks inherit eachother. Im just saying i have never once had a problem with PEX, It may be a terrible plugin, but i wont stop using it until group manager or another permission plugin has good MySQL support. Also a lot of these problems people get are from the flat file. Using a MySQL database for PEX is proven to have better use.

I started out with PEX and had little issue getting it up and running properly from a complete noobs perspective.

how ever since 1.4.6 I have not been able to make it work properly and have since gone to Group Manager the latest dev version. It is really packed with some great features, I especially like the "mirror" aspect in the config file, saves a ton of work for multi-world things.

I have heard PEX latest dev was working but I was still having issues til I switched to Group Manager

Ever since 1.4.6 I've had massive, massive issues with PEX.

I'm seriously considering moving from PEX (back) to GroupManager - but it lacks features such as ModifyWorld does...We want to prevent certain users to use certain items, and PEX+MW had an excellent support for it. Is there any alternative to this?

    Sure. GroupManager + WorldGuard :)

I noticed Essentials has now AntiBuild support in it as well - even seems to support item-based action nodes! I will test it out.

  24. You need to Go into the console and type: pex user (your-name) add permissions.*
