Hello i am currently making a minecraft server list and i would like to make it nothing like other sites and i would like to make it fair for smaller servers to get to the top if you have any ideas post below but here is how i plan to do things

    Score

i plan to calculate score using the following aspects - Uptime, Votes

A vote would be worth 2 score

Uptime would give you score every day something like this

At x time the system would loop through checking up times and if uptime is

    98 to 100 = 10 score
    95 to 97 = 8 score
    90 to 94 = 5 score
    85 to 89 = 3 score
    80 to 84 = 1 score
    1 to 79 = 0 score
    0 = Delete server

i would like more ideas to factor in for calculating score if you have any post below

    Uptime

uptime is calculated every 5 mintues

    Votes

i have not decided if im going to allow votes every 12 or 24 hours again post below if you have a suggestion

    Posting server options

Currently on the home page there is something like this

    the types are

All, Vanilla, Craftbukkit, Tekkit, Other, Random

and when you update list its the same thing as the normal list just only the ones with that server type selected are showing

currently when you goto create a server you have to fill this out

if you guys have anymore options to add to this list let me know and how you would like to see them used

I WILL BE UPDATING THIS POST OFTEN SO POST YOUR IDEAS BELOW PLEASE

    Suggestions:
    • Don't write it in PHP
    • Open source it so that everyone can contribute
    • Don't put ads
    • Have an actual design rather than a bootstrap template

Why would I do that? It's kinda business and I would be spoon feeding you and you can just take my code

Before any of that, how do you plan on getting viewers to your site?
That's the biggest issue with the other 100 server listings.

Even though it might be feature filled and nice look, if nobody visits other than server owners it is rather pointless.
You have to compete against established sites with thousands of views each day.

I am almost positive he wants revenue from either bids or ads. :p
After seeing what some other sites are getting probably.

Please tell me how making the code open-source stops him from getting ad revenue.

    In his eyes...
He probably thinks someone will steal his entire code and design and compete against him and will therefore lose that possible ad/bid income.

If he just asks what people want, he's gonna get the same thing all people want. I doubt he's gonna make any ad profit anyways, also, it's gonna fail if your main purpose for creating it is money.

to get viewers i will advertise on minestatus and other sites just like MinecraftMultiverse did thats how i found out about them i saw their ad EVERYWHERE and now i use their site for my server

So you're going to advertise your server list on other server lists?

  18. I created my list out of a need I had. Approach your project from the eyes of a server admin. What's inherently wrong with a lot of server lists? For me, it was hard for the "little guy" to get any exposure, so I developed an in-house ad system and a "random" banner rotation that rewarded servers who couldn't get voted to the top.

I also wanted to stand out. As many people have already said - what makes your site different? You can start with the aesthetics and make the design unique. Memorable. I went with a more themed approach on Minecraft Server Finder. I also have a bunch of goofy YouTube videos.

After all this, is the actual hard part; the legwork. You have to get players and admins to care about your site. Google SEO, check out www.reddit.com/r/seo and do everything "whitehat." Put effort into your advertising and reach out and talk to as many server owners as you can.

Just because one server list did it, doesn't mean it's right (that's tacky -- advertising your server list on another). Or successful.
I've never heard of MinecraftMultiverse, unless you mean the plugin...

    No minecraftmultiverse.com

I can also go server to server and let server owners know

If someone EVER came onto my server and advertising something, I would *end* them.
If your best method of becoming "famous" is advertising and pissing people off to make ad revenue, just save your time and stop the project.

I'd like to see a good, solid open-source server list out there. Other people (me, pick me!!!) could help out and could really make something cool.

That "smaller server" idea is really good, especially sense the big guys dominate every list out there. Find something unique to base the listing height on, like a personal review or something other than voting (or just make it random, but get rid of the crap servers).

This does sound like a pretty cool project! If you need help (I'm beastly at CSS and graphic design) I'd love to help out.

Make different tags to search under,
one of them being "Small Servers" with the ones with the least votes at the top.

    np98765

How would you sort those? There would be a bazillion servers with 0 votes... :p

    HyrulesLegend

Maybe the one with the most uptime at the top? :p

You don't make money off adds if people don't see them, and a lot of people use adblocker. Even if you get what, 5,000 visitors, you'll only make a profit of about 1 dollar a month. That's if everything goes right.

Why is everyone being so negative? Im not asking about ads im trying to get ideas to make my list unique and i like the Small Servers idea (sorting by uptime) but how many votes is considered a small server because over time if the small people on that server vote 100 times well its still a small server

i have been thinking i can do like an average players per day here is how i would calculate it

every hour get how many players are online and every day get the average of the players online(add all the numbers and divide by 24) so lets say a server had these results

    10, 11, 7, 0, 8, 17, 20, 20, 19, 16, 18, 14, 11, 10, 5, 8, 7, 10, 0, 2, 5, 6, 5, 3

24 numbers so the average would be 9.6 players

so maybe small servers will have an average > 15 idk what the numbers would look like for that but they will be grater just a little

I actually own Minecraft Multiverse (now called http://mineservers.com).

It has been on the backburner recently. All the other server lists decided to get anti-competitive on me and blocked me from advertising on their sites. Shame because the current state of server lists absolutely sucks (*cough* sponsored listings *cough*) which is what I am trying to improve.

We've just started running competitions (http://twitter.com/mineserverscom) which give back to the users/server owners and to generate some publicity. Soon we'll be working on improving the whole voting system to make it much fairer to everyone and then after that, we're going to implement a cool new system (it's a secret for now) to promote new and upcoming servers.

As for cash, we barely break even with our costs - but we enjoy it which is why we continue.

My advice, continue only if you're doing it for fun.

Open source it and let other people contribute instead of asking for people's ideas and then executing them your way.
