I've been searching around for a chat plugin that does:
    - Global chat
    - Nearby chat (400 blocks in range (configurable))
    - And other customizable channels
I've tried ichat and herochat and i didn't really find them so great.

    Thanks

I have tried a few chat plugins, and found HeroChat to be one of the most flexible, yet easy to use (for the player). There are a lot of back-end kinds of configuration that must be done, but once everything is set the chat just flows very smoothly for players.

What didn't you like about HC?

I'm going to play devil's advocate here: HeroChat is immensely unintuitive for the average user. Fairly complicated slash commands are used to join and exit channels; as an individual you constantly have to be aware of what channel you're talking into by default, and what channels you and other people can see; and (since most people end up talking into a private channel by default) there's an added complexity associated with chatting globally, which can kill the server-wide sense of community.

On the server I administrate, we used HeroChat for a few weeks. All in all it was too confusing and too divisive, and I ended up writing my own solution to the problem of multi-user public messaging - which, so far, has been both much easier to learn and less likely to promote the division of the community into cliques.

Is this the plugin 'Aside' you have in your sig?

Yeah, it is - although I wasn't trying to promote it as a solution to the problems in the OP, seeing as it doesn't have any built-in support for local chat.

If you're interested, it does attempt to provide a replacement for chat channels: "chatgroups" (basically, named lists of playernames) are created and defined by users and inserted into messages as a tag. A chat message that contains the tag ">>admins" would be sent privately to every member of the group "admins".

There is no need to advocate or opine. The question was directed at the OP regarding their experience. I'm honestly curious about what they didn't like about HC. I have no interest in defending HC.

But since you did provide your experiences, it is interesting to me that your experience is nearly opposite of mine. I rarely field chat command questions as even new players pick it up effortlessly, only 3 commands are typically used (@, /<channel>, /ch <channel>), your current chat channel is displayed in the chat window so you never have to guess which channel you're in, if you want to be sure someone sees your chat you just use @, and most players stay in the global channel which fosters a since of community. :) Same plugin. Completely different experience.

Good luck on your quest, fussionzz97!

I joined this server a while back and had exactly what i wanted: /g {Message} for global chat and normal chat in a set radius. I believe this was Townychat but unsure and i dont use Towny.
