With the Minecraft 1.3 release date fast approaching, a lot of people are wondering when we will be releasing a CraftBukkit Recommended Build for Minecraft 1.3. We hope this short announcement will answer those questions.

Due to the size of the impending 1.3 update, we are unable to guarantee that we'll have a compatible CraftBukkit Recommended Build out in time for the release of Minecraft 1.3. Although we started working on the update immediately after the Minecraft 1.3 preview was made available to the public, a lot of things were added, removed and changed in Minecraft from 1.2.5 and, as such, this update requires more work than usual to get things up and running. That being said, we'll continue to do our best to get an update out within a reasonable amount of time and will likely follow our usual policy of promoting the first Recommended Build the moment we get something that compiles and runs without any testing done whatsoever.

As we have done a significant amount of important work on CraftBukkit 1.2.5 builds since our last RB, we'll be promoting a new Recommended Build shortly. This is done so that people have a reliable, stable build to use until we can get a 1.3 compatible build out and so that everyone who relies on Recommended Builds are able to take advantage of all the fixes, improvements and so on we've done since the last 1.2.5 RB.

Thank you for your patience, understanding and continued support; we greatly appreciate it!

Everyone wants attention from the bukkit team, attention means not working on the new build... think about it. ;)

Just keep watching the forum, as soon as they're ready we can all download it!
(after a few downloadserver crashes due to overload)

My server is running anyway and the players are smart enough to not upgrade or at least keep a copy.
They all know I will do my best to upgrade a.s.a.p.

p.s. as impatient as anyone else, can't wait. keep up the good work! Now get to it! :D

    THEY DO NOT KNOW!!!

There are many different people working on it, and each one doesn't even know how long it is going to take them to finish 1 task. So it is basically impossible to give an estimate, It could be 1 day, it could be a week. It is impossible for a group like the one working on bukkit to give an estimate. There are unknown variables that will impact the situation in unknown ways.

My issue lies not with Bukkit and their amazing team, nor with any of the changes and updates that are coming.

My biggest issue stems with the almost insane method of release from Mojang.

Being as the multiplayer aspect has not only helped MineCraft to be what it is today, but has shown that it is indeed the very future of and the draw for this game. Mojang even acknowledges this as they have recently swapped out the separate single-player aspect and made it a function of the multiplay code base as it were.

Here is the problem. Why in the heck would you do an official release that effectively cuts off EVERY single multiplayer server that runs with any dignity.

This leaves us in a bind as every kid and their brother/sister is going to click "yes" on the new update and then be left in the dark as why they can't connect to their favorite servers.

Considering that a game that appeals to the age range of 9 - 15 at it's most common, why are there no built in language filters? Why is there not a spam/ban filter built-in?

Instead we have to wait until not only bukkit is updated but all the safeties are in place as well. Again, I don't have an issue with this but I can't for the life of me figure out WHY Mojang would do it in this fashion.

What the heck stops them from saying "Ok, Mojangs side is done, AND Bukkit team is ready, NOW let's release it to the public" instead of... "Ok world here it is! The new minecraft! Vanilla and unfit for server use!" Seriously.

As far as those who refuse to read the info on this game they love so much, we server operators spend countless hours trying to keep the many hundreds if not thousands of members informed as to the constant changes.

Again what gets me is that instead of it saying "Would you like to update?" It would be SO simple to have it say

"Updating May Cut Your Access To Online Servers Until They Can Update As Well" "Do you wish to continue?"

At this point, Mojang is the team that needs to step up and truly acknowledge the high chaos and stress this causes each server as we play the hurry up and wait game.

Having said that, Thank You to the Bukkit devs AND Mojang, AND the entire community for an adventure like no other.

One of my players asked me yesterday why I wasn't updated to 1.3 yet.
I told him it wasn't out yet, and that patience is a virtue.
He told me that his dick was a virtue, and quit.

My point being, it must be nice to have a server that isn't full of people who look up and drown when it rains.

EDIT: Oh look, he just logged on right as I was typing this! What luck! Here is what it looked like: http://i.imgur.com/6KI3W.png

    He quit moments later.

I feel like these questions were answered in the very post you copied.
The general theme of this thread is: No, they don't know when it's going to release.

If you've been following the commentary from TnT, the update is banana% complete, though may be offset by the inclusion of potato related data. This is their way of saying: If you need an arbitrary figure to estimate when it will be released, by all means, plug in your own numbers and run with it.

I also recommend checking out Blizzard's definition of Soon. It's just as good:
But I'm sure each time they have to stop what they are doing to answer the same question over, and over, and over again must help productivity and increase the rate at which they can get work done.

(PS: Mojang released the server and client update (via their news feed) to the public about a week ago (July 26).)

Circus act for everyone's entertainment? When did transparency become a circus act? Several good books, articles, random tips, etc cover the importance of transparency before, during, and after development. Transparency builds relations and trust between developers and their communities. When I see a developer or group reeling back in horror at this idea, I can't help but wonder what problems they are dealing with that they don't want others to see.

I'll admit, I'm new here. But not to the world, the internet, development, design, or project management. I hadn't thought of you guys as the sort that just threw out "when it's done now stop asking". I was wrong I suppose. Timelines aren't important here. Transparency is a circus act. I'll move along then and wait patiently like a good little twit waiting for his biscuit.

Edit - I just remembered Mojang said August 1st. It's August 1st. So it can't be too hard to deliver within a specified time-frame and do away with the "soon" ideology mention above...

More Developers mean that there is a bigger chance for inconsistency, More errors. In school its hard to work in a group of 25 but in a small group there is more work done :p

Is there an estimated date? Some people said on a thread that it was being released later today.

What transparency is missing? The team is working on migrating Vanilla 1.3.1 to CraftBukkit 1.3.1. The code is open source. That's pretty damn transparent.

Transparency does not mean you get to see every issue they run into, every line of code they write, and every time they take a bathroom break. That's not transparency, that's insanity.

Mojang sets the pace. Bukkit does not. Bukkit has to react based off when Mojang releases or intends to release their product. You should understand that if you understand everything else so well.
