So, the family caught a slight Minecraft addiction. My son asked for purchase for his birthday, and the next thing you know, we are all builders/landscapers. As such, I've set up a server in my basement using an old machine. At first, this machine had 1GB of RAM, and for a couple of us, that was okay. However, several of my FB friends chimed in that THEY like Minecraft so I opened it up to the outside world. Then I started getting the infamous: Did the time change? error and lots of lag.

I added memory. I found some more in another machine and added that. Recently, I remembered that I tried to eBay a 2G PC2 stick, but the payer welched, and I had it in an envelope ready to ship. I added THAT to the box and now it has 3.5G of RAM. It's running a 32-bit kernel, but now that it's over 3.0G of RAM, I can't seem to push Xmx above 2612. 2688 and it dies. Changing the RAM from 3.0G to 3.5, I haven't been able to increase how much Bukkit uses. Out of curiosity, I fired up a virtual machine on a one of my newer computers. I gave it 4G and a 32-bit kernel: Same song, next verse. Despite having 4.0G, Java only lets it access 2612.

I have loaded the Debian "bigmem" kernel, and still, Java limits to 2612. I don't really have a spare computer that will run a 64-bit kernel. I must be missing something obvious, here. I've looked at /etc/security/limits and there are not set process limitations, but something is blocking allocation above this limit, and I don't know what it might be ... and I'm pretty Linux-savvy. After much Google, I am very frustrated and can only think I must be searching for the wrong thing ...

    Any ideas?
