Taking over a project on BukkitDev without author permission

  1. Hey there Bukkiteers,

I've got a question. I'm using a plugin called MyTitles (http://dev.bukkit.org/server-mods/mytitles) and want to take over the development of this plugin. The author has abandoned the plugin (last message is from oktober 21st) and is MIA.

The plugin has an MIT license so I could use the source and make a new version (what I already did.) I could create a new project but that would only clutter BukkitDev with the same plugin twice.

Is it possible for me to take over this plugin without the authors approval? I don't need full author rights. Just enough to upload files and change pages.

    Many thanks for your response!

You can try getting in contact with the author, sending them a PM on dev.bukkit.org or here (if you know their username) and allowing them to add you as an author/create a new project.

Othwise, you can always create a 'Fork' of the plugin, not copying the code but creating your own version with more features.

(E.G xWarp is a Fork of MyWarp)

and post in his threads... as long as he is active currently you can't really do a lot ... except do a fork like saul100 suggested..

I know how that is :-(

  4. Problem is. I don't want to fork and rename it. As the plugin is already complete. Only a few bugs and features that needs adding.
Thanks. I've send him a PM on BukkitDev because his forum account says this: dannycrafts was last seen: Dec 2, 2011

But for my state of mind. Is it possible to take over a plugin when it's abandoned? Or do I have to fork it? That way I can be sure about my actions :)

Forking it with a different name is probably the best way to avoid confusion

you can... trust me... on dev.bukkit it is not even a problem... more here as you need to watch 2 threads and people always post in the old one still..

Oh. That page... I see he doesn't frequent this forum anymore.

@dadaemon : Better luck messaging him on dev.bukkit then!

well not THAT makes me old :)

a PM also sometimes work... well at least one time a developer came back looked at the pm but didn't respond and disappeared again.. In this case a fork would be best and using an other name... you should give credit though one way or the other

Well, sometimes we can't do what we want but what we must ;) The original project isn't yours and while the license allows you to use the code and do your own thing it's not the old project any longer.

(Btw, thanks Don Redhorse for apparently being older than me. I was worried ;))
