When I open my servers.properties with notepad and change the IP and try to run my server it says the PORT is taken, it says this with any port number, when I don't have my IP set I can use 127.0.0.1 to get on my server, but none of my friends can, not sure what to do.

Have you set up a static ip? If you haven't, set one up, give your friends your external ip, and use localhost to connect if your on the same computer. Do not change the server.properties ip or port.

ok first off you can't just change the ip listed in properties as it does not actually alter your ip (its you telling the server what ip to run on, it has to match your ip). You should leave the ip field blank and look on this website for your external ip (the one other people need to connect to) and see if port 25565 is open.
Edit: open your network settings and where it says automatic (for ip) change that to manual and input a valid ip (you can change the last 2 numbers anywhere from o to 255 as long as that ip is not in use)

Just give your friends whatever it says here:
    http://www.whatsmyip.org/

Like said above, don't change the IP in the server properties and type 'localhost' to connect to your own server.

Go to portforward.com (it has a guide, it's how I learned to set my static ip)

I told my friend to use that IP from the website, but it says "fail to connect to server-connection timed out: connect"

did this website say port 25565 on your ip adress is open?

    Did you forward your port?

Then you didn't even bother to portforward it...

    1. Portforward it, go to www.portforward.com, get a guide and learn to portforward.
    2. Once you're done and you've portforwarded your IPv4 and IPv6 IPs and port 25565/25566 or which ever port, log in with them. (For example, 192.168.0.30:25565).
    3. Get your IP from www.whatismyip.org.
    4. Go to www.canyouseeme.com, keep it open.
    5. Open server.properties and replace the IP with your IPv4 or IPv6 IP.
    6. Start your server.
    7. Go back to www.whatismyip.org and put in the port you forwarded and the port your running on server.properties.
    8. If its open congrats, if not you did it wrong.
    9. Give out your IP from www.whatismyip.org.

I used Simple Port forwarding, I created one named "Minecraft" and put the starting port as 25565, the end port at 25565, for the IP adress do I put the external IP or the Default gateway?

you use your IPv4 or IPv6. Just read part 4-8 on my post above yours.

set 5 is unneeded though its actually better to leave it blank imo
Edit and its "http://canyouseeme.org/" not canyouseeme.com

either works out. I leave mine blank. At times I use step 5.

Ok I put my IPv4 in both Simple Port Forwanding and servers.properties, still no luck with opening my PORT

    Thanks for the correction.

I don't use Simple portforwarding, just leave the IP in server.properties blank.

    no problem :)
@Shmoo what router / isp (internet service provider) are you using?

My friends still can't join, So I put the IPv4 in the servers.properties...and then what IP is used for the server? They tried both and it said connection lost, it wasn't even letting me use localhost.

P.S. One friend thinks the problem is me using WLAN as my internet, could that be a problem?

My router is `Smc8014w-G` and Rodgers

so were you able to log in with:
    username: cusadmin
    password: password
and change your portforwarding to work? does canyouseeme.org work? You should be giving people your external ip to connect to (the one listed online at whatismyip and canyouseeme). leave your ip in the server preferences blank.

I was able to log in with it, canyouseeme.org says ``Error: I could not see your service on(My IP here) on port (25566)Reason: Connection timed out``

I still have no idea how to setup a static ip

a static ip is just an ip that doesn't change (basically) so in your computer's network settings look at what your ip is. change Automatic ip to manual and input the same ip you saw (or another open ip). now your ip will stay the same.

Ok, I got to that page do I use the ``USe the following IP adress`?

    dak393

yes then you enter your static ip (what is your local ip right now?)
    subnet mask should be 255.255.255.0
and depending on you ip format default gateway is probably 192.168.1.1

So for the first part i get the the IP from whatsmyip.com?
EDIT: I get an error messgae saying the default gateway isn`t on the same network segment....

no you want an internal ip that would be your external you want something like 192.168.x.y where x and y are numbers from 0 to 255 an example would be 192.168.1.12 or 192.168.0.24 ect... usually x is 0 or 1 and computers assign increasing numbers for y (you can't use 192.168.1.1, or any other in use ip) try using a higher number for y :)
