    Greetings folks!

I'm currently working on my own server and it's gonna be huge. I want to create an extraordinary atmosphere where players feel some kind of warmness when they just hang around. With NPCs walking around, popping up random messages and much much more.

I'm planning on creating an (MMO)RPG, "MMO" in brackets because, well, massively multiplayer online won't really work on Minecraft, except for when you have a PC with the powers of a black hole sucking in everything in its way.

Help me build a PC that is good working as a server. The server will take a bit more time, so it won't be online in the next few months, but until then, I'd like to get a PC that is able to run a server properly and also run games at low/mid specs. I don't really want or need any strong GPU, since it's gonna be working as a server when it's ready.

I thought of getting a very strong processor and 16-32GB Ram, but I read somewhere that a strong CPU and a weak GPU don't go well with each other, is that correct?

I have also read, that Intel Xeon is better for server-stuff, but weaker when it comes to gaming, but is there really a huge difference to the i-series?

If you have any recommendations regarding what processor and what GPU exactly(model), please feel free to share.

@SammurDev Why not get a dedicated host instead? Then you don't need to multitask the machine, don't have to keep it on 24/7, don't have to port forward, give your home IP, and you don't need to manage the security yourself.

I don't have the money for renting a server. I want to sell my current mid-class gaming notebook and get a PC for the money I get. My notebook is also pretty much up all the time, so it won't be an issue if my computer stays up 24 7. I'd like to start the server and see where it goes. Since I'm not sure if the server will be popular enough, I won't go for renting a server from somewhere else.

And also, I'm using a dynamic IP.

@SammurDev Dynamic IP and server don't go well together.

    Dynamic DNS does

Which again doesn't offer any ddos or other protection.
But if you still want this: get a decent machine, not focussed on the server.

Look, don't make a gaming computer and use it as a server.

    Reasons:
A server usually runs Linux, and not many games support Linux.
Why game on a server? That's like riding on a freaking bull with no experience!
It's not like you're gonna use that server anyway if you're playing games, that makes it no use.
Also, you said "a computer up for 24 7". If that's true, then rent a server. They're fairly cheap, (eg. bisecthosting) and are easy to setup! Just keep your $699 1.8GHZ pc for now.
