Something that's bugged me for a while now that I just want to rant about is not being able to rate tutorials in the resource section. I don't know why but I just feel like it would save me time if I could look at the rating of a tutorial. Since a lot of the tutorials I see is kind of... unnecessary. So I guess I believe in my opinion it would be nice to have a rating system. Kind of unnecessary to have one but it's would just be nice to have imo.

I agree with this, you should be able to rate tutorials, and as such sort by ratings, but I doubt this will happen.

Why give something new for Curse to break? jk jk

I actually like this idea too. I would be surprised if it was actually implemented tbh. I want Curse to fix the broken stuff first.

Shall we start a list? XD
And I agree entierly. I don't see them doing this, despite it being a very good idea. @bwfcwalshy, wasn't there something similar to this we discussed with the ID tutorials or am I imagining things.

  7. @87pen The problem with ratings is that they don't tend to work. A lot of users (such as those who require the tutorials) tend to rate a tutorial well if it was easy to follow, or they enjoyed reading it. A tutorial could be shockingly bad or even recommend dangerous things, yet be rated highly by those who do not have the knowledge to understand what's wrong with it.

If you want an example of this, just look at TheBCBroz's first episode. The tutorial contains bad practices right from the very start and various people throughout these forums will recommend steering clear of them, and yet it is currently rated at 2365 likes, and 159 dislikes. In other words, just under 94% of people who rated the video thought it was good.

A rating system would not make it easier for new users to tell which tutorials are bad. It would mean highly rated tutorials become more and more popular, regardless of their quality.

Extending this train of thought, TheBCBroz became so popular, because if I remember correctly, at the time he was one of the few youtubers, who created plugin tutorials with a decent quality at a decent rate, and really, there wasn't a topic he didn't ever covered. He was still sh*t though.

@AdamQpzm I see good and bad could come out of the suggestion, I guess I had hope that with active members of the bukkit community who are aware of bad practice. Tutorials would be rated honestly, I guess it comes down to who is watching since having a public tutorial on youtube is far different than having one on a plugin development community. Anyone who wants to learn how to create bukkit plugins will instantly be drawn to tutorials like the BCBroz who are not moderated or commented on others who have Java knowledge and can tell new developers to steer clear because it contains bad practices. But that's why I see the rating system working on Bukkit. Bukkit has active members who will say in the post if it has bad practices. We have an active community that can respond to a tutorial and hopefully rate in honestly. But there will be that wave of new people who follow a tutorial and become copy-paste warriors and click thumbs up. I see where it can go wrong but I feel with an active community since a lot of us go through the resource section can respond to tutorials. But this is just my opinion of course and I do indeed see the good and bad of the idea of a rating system. God I wrote so much without cracking a meme, ummmmmmmm Such long, much words, wow?

Another problem with Youtube tutorials is that their (old*) rating system combines negative votes with the positive. Sure, you may get a few people giving a negative review, but you have this massive wave of people who give each tutorial points that cancel out the negative reviews. What would be needed for a rating system would not only be the total score, but the amount of positive (not as important) and negative reviews. It's one thing to look at a tutorial that has thousands of "points", and another seeing all those points and hundreds of negative votes.

(* Remember when Youtube had a star rating system? Pepperidge farm remembers.)

If you want to know if a resource is good, read the posts. People will tell the faults with it and hopefully the OP will fix it.

  14. Lol.

But yeah, seriously, I think there's an overestimation on the number of people who'd get it right. I think it would be outweighed quite a bit by those who'd get it wrong. Especially since I find it hard to trust star rating systems.

If you ever look up on the app store or play market, no one likes to give a rating between 1 and 5, only the borders. This way, the all the diagrams look like this:
    5: #####################
    4: ###
    3: ###
    2:##
    1: ##################
Why would we have more than two choice, if people only like to choose out of 2?
(Okay, this diagram is nearly not as beautiful, as your picture, but you get the idea)

@mcdorli That still doesn't help the fact that
I'm just going to assume that people who like it will rate it 4 or 5. Also people might give it a bad rating because it doesn't apply to them or may seem useless. The rating system seems nice but I don't see it working as wanted or expected.

Yeah, that's the problem with allowing everyone to vote, and having everyone's vote be equal. The only way around this would be to allow "voting privilege" to only a select few (Moderators, and people who hopefully can identify good or bad practices). The problem with that would then be having a small group of people review all of the tutorials.
