    Staff Update - July 1, 2013:
This thread is not from 2013. This thread is about the 2011, BETA version of Minecraft 1.6. There is no ETA for the 2013 Minecraft 1.6 update, as always. Please do not ask staff about when an update will happen, as they have no estimate for you. Again, this thread is not relevant to today's update.

    Update 2 - June 23, 2011 at 9:12PM EST:
    New Recommended Build #928.

This Recommended Build addresses a few API issues and provides Plugin Developers with more events to work with, allowing more awesome plugins to be made. Unfortunately, this new RB WILL break some plugins (mostly plugins that deal with controlling a player's movement - details can be found near the end of this announcement). As always, please be sure to backup your server before updating just in case!

See this post for more information.

    Update - May 30th, 2011 at 5:55PM EST:
Since the release of Minecraft 1.6, we've seen quite a few rapid-fire bugfix updates from Mojang addressing issues the community has noticed and reported back on. While we're glad Mojang are on top of things and getting updates out there quickly to improve the community's experience, this does result in extra work on our part since we have to re-do some of the work we've completed for the previous update. As a result, I made the decision to hold off on getting a build out for Minecraft 1.6 until we were able to evaluate the update and decide if that is what we feel we should do or not.

Over the weekend, that is what we have been busy doing. Unfortunately, I was out of town and unable to handle the situation as much as I would have liked, leading to a lack of communication on our part with you guys, our community. Nevertheless, my team was happily and diligently working on the update and in regular contact with me. Still, I would like to apologise for our lack of communication, I simply was not in a position to do so.

That being said, we have noticed a few issues with the update that we've been able to address, so we are leaning towards bringing out a build for Minecraft 1.6.5. Though this build may not address all the issues we've found, it is still usable and produces a playable server with a decent experience. However, I am not yet sure if this build will qualify for recommendation.

Please bear this in mind when using the build: it is not fully supported (though we welcome detailed, useful bug reports) and not recommended (we can't guarantee stability) to use. There are some Minecraft vanilla issues that Mojang need to address that are beyond the scope of our project to fix and we are still touching things up (like Nether/multiworld support).

If you want to use the build we'll be pushing soon, please backup your server and make sure you understand the risks before doing so. Once again, we cannot guarantee that it won't eat your cake or spawn tiny creeper babies that take over your world.

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------

As I'm sure we're all aware, Mojang released Minecraft 1.6 today (Thursday, May 26, 2011) around 5AM EST and we've been hard at work getting a build out that is compatible with Minecraft 1.6 out. Since the release, Minecraft has seen quite a few small bugfix updates addressing some unnoticed bugs and we've pretty easily kept up with them. Unfortunately, there appear to be some issues with the update that is making the game unplayable for SMP players, so we've decided to wait for a bugfix update before we recommend any builds.

Will there be a CraftBukkit for Minecraft 1.6?
Given the reports of showstopping bugs present in 1.6, there's a high chance a new bugfix update for Minecraft will be out tomorrow or even several times this week. As a result, it is unlikely we will be releasing a Recommended Build for 1.6 until we have something stable to work with.

That being said, we recommend everyone stay on 1.5 for a while until the showstopping issues are fixed and we can get a new, stable, compatible build out.

You can already get CraftBukkit for Minecraft 1.6.4, but it is unsupported and not recommended.

I'll be scouring the internet for further reports on how Minecraft 1.6 is performing, but preliminary research and our own testing has revealed it as unplayable due to chunks sporadically loading or not loading.

I am having a few problems. The server has crashed once entirely, and boots players at random. Missing chunks are still a problem, teleporting is weird, and teleporting between worlds kicks upon return.

Overall it seems playable, but 814 really isn't worth any potential data loss as a result of the continuous errors flowing on my console. I'll stick with 803 for now, when the recommended build comes out in a few days or so, I'll move then :p

I tested the #814 and there were no lags in the normal world (didn't test the Nether) The Plugins I use seem to work like they should (ATM FalseBook, PistonMod, MagnetBlock, ImageImport, GiveIt, NoMoreRain and WormholeExtreme)

Why Notch doesn't just hurry it up with supplying nightly builds for the MOD community, is beyond us all.
All the show stopping bugs could have been taken out before he pushed the 'big' update.

The main difference would be the diminished amount of update disappointments.
As the server and even some if not all the mods could be ready right on the patch day.

Sure source code would be even better, but any improvement on the current FIRE WHEN READY, oops I missed, system, would be a welcome change.

    Thanks!
About the 'not working yet'... ah well, I expect an 1.6.5 before lunch and 1.6.6 before dinner, and I'll Wait for an RB anyway, and then wait until my ~25 plugins are ready to go... I'm sure there will come some fix :p.

  10. Yeah, my feelings exactly. I think the Bukkit devs deserve some credit here, because (although quite unstable) they managed to get basic support for each patch revision up in no time at all. While working blindfolded (aka interfacing with obfuscated code).

Mojang is obviously not caring very much about the PC version of Minecraft anymore. That mobile version they previewed is scary in that it can only draw what little dedication they have nowadays away.

The point is: Once a company takes money for a product they commit themselves to a certain degree of quality. Saying: "Well, I told you that my product is crap, but you decided to give me money for it anyway so now it's entirely your problem if it doesn't function" is not the way how the (software) industry works.

Putting the label "Beta" on a piece of software which you have to pay for doesn't disburden the publisher from all obligations! Of course you can try to do that but you may have to live with the consequences: That the user base gets upset and turns away from you and your product.

With regards to the comparison with "big companies": What is the difference between applying patches to an official release and applying patches to a Beta release which is sold as if it was an official release?

Assuming that it is a standard client, the server will still be run on a Linux/Windows machine. I doubt they will have more than 1 version of the server.

Well, CraftBukkit "works" on the linux 1.6.4 version, problem is, I've tested 1.6.4 in several 32 and 64bit with fully updated java libs, even vanilla with brand new generated worlds and the only thing I get is endOFstream or overflow and its absolutely unplayable.

Notch must take care and TEST the freakin updates BEFORE releasing them to the public, some posts above people were whining about beta and stuff, being a beta that was paid for, does not take the responsibility of Mojang shoulders, in fact it does carries them even more.

Releasing a "buggy" and thoroughly tested final release (like happens to most software companies), is pretty normal and that's called Support of what users paid for, releasing something that is unplayable by any means, is another thing.

I personally don't panic because bukkit folks take their time to release, they are doing it for FREE, or even if bukkit mod and other plugins ruin my world and server (hey, 6 hour lapse backups does the job), but Mojang cannot by any means release something that doesn't work.

Overall, players join and just stand there in the void with chunks not loading and getting "kicked".

  16. You're confused. Usually when you pay for a product, it is a complete and released product. In that case yes, you have every right to whinge about quality. Minecraft initially had zero budget, so Notch opted for a different model, where you pay for it before it's finished. People willingly hopped on board. It was their choice to do so. They have announced an official launch date, which is 11/11/11. When they release what they claim to tbe the completed** product, then all your comments about expecting a degree of quality, hading over money etc. becomes valid.

I don't agree with the "beta" label myself, since technically it's still an alpha. But people were pressuring about having a "beta" release so much, that I think Mojang eventually just slapped that label on to shut those people up.

Anyway, as alpha/beta testers, our role is to try the software, put it through its paces and report the bugs.

**Whatever that will mean, since they stated the game will never really stop evolving.

The 1.6 build works for my server...perk to not having tons of mods to make a good server :D

I use really only use factions and it seems to work. A tiny bug that I believe it causes to restart the server time to time but I believe that is a bug in factions not bukkit/minecraft itself.

Well, I think they have gathered enough money in the meantime enabling them to roll out new software with at least some basic quality. When they had no money at all and when it was a one-man show, yes okay, I would agree to a certain level. But incrementally increasing the price for the Beta and then delivering software with major bugs (aka as showstoppers) is not what you expect from a professional company regardless of being Beta or not.

Your expectations of what a "professional company" should and shouldn't do have no bearing on what are required of Mojang.

"Wah wah wah, my toy is broken, I don't want a broken toy, I want a perfect toy, and they *owe* it to me, on account of me wanting it so bad".

The toy is broken. Put it down, and play with another for a while. Or grow the fuck up, either way, stop whining about it.

The chunk loading issue only seems to affect servers running on 64-bit java.
Changing the java load path to your 32-bit installation (%programfiles(x86)%) seems to be a sucessful work-around.
EDIT: Seems like x86 is making no difference, bu tp to someone or dying will trigger a chunk load.

    @rustybroomhandle: If you think so...

@KainsRache: Yes, Betas are normally known to be free of charge. Name another software product for which you pay for the Beta/Alpha version...

To summarize once more: Nobody expects a Beta release to be bug free. This is not the point in the whole discussion here. However, you should not expect to see real showstoppers which prevent the software to be used at all. And if those stoppers slip thru (which always can happen, we all are humans) they should be fixed immediately. And if time is limited due to important events lying ahead then the release should be postponed.

    It could be that simple.

    Great post.

I agree with nearly every point you said except the last paragraph.

Any person or persons as a group, individual, or corporation, that manufactures, or produces anything for public consumption has an ethical obligation to commit themselves to a certain degree of quality in that product they have put forth to the public. To not do so is to harken back to the times of 1500 to early 20th century snake oil salesmen who bottle whatever they wish to sell off the back of a wagon with a promise, hope and a prayer.

It is the right thing to do when asking someone for monetary exchange for their good. And I think Notch does this already. I think he does give a 'certain degree of quality'. It may not be what all wish it to be because one can never please all of the people all of the time. But it is quality enough to keep us here, and keep our servers going with or without a Bukkit.

Times are however changing so this particular process for what is worth is virtually over. Patience is all that must be had now.

And for all you angry, people, saying horrible things about Notch or just speaking poorly of the man like Leben above...Know this one thing in your complete and absolute ungratefulness: But not for Minecraft, Notch's hard work, you would not be here, insulting the man for his giving you something that you apparently like enough to struggle as the rest of us do through this beta phase. If you wish to have a less stressful experience run a pure vanilla server, or learn java and modify the jar directly yourself and not depend on 3rd parties who can either fix or exacerbate things making functionality and playability worse.

Remember how you got here. And if you don't like how you got here or being here now, then just slough off those fake bounds of responsibility and leave the software you paid $12 or so dollars for behind - heck, you've thrown up fast food that cost more and didn't complain nearly as much, I am sure.
