PorteCoulissante has moved to BukkitDev! I will no longer be updating this thread, please use the BukkitDev page to keep track of developments, download the plugin and source code, read how to configure it and other details, etc.

PorteCoulissante - The easy and realistic portcullis plugin:

Build redstone powered portcullises, without using commands! This is my first ever Minecraft plugin, so please be gentle! I needed a project for my first plugin, and I've always wanted a working portcullis in my town gate, so I decided to write this. I subsequently discovered that there already is a portcullis plugin (which is why I named mine after the French word that the word portcullis was derived from), but I think mine has enough distinguishing features to be useful.

Download the latest release from the BukkitDev page.

Also check out the new sister plugin, RetractableBridge, which does basically the same thing, only horizontally.

    Features:
    • It doesn't use commands. Just build the portcullis and it will work.
    • Stateless, i.e. it does not have to save anything on the server.
    • It's redstone powered, giving you flexibility in controlling it.
    • It is realistic. The portcullis does not disappear, but moves up and down just like a real one would.
    Usage:
    • Build the portcullis itself by stacking rows of fences (wood or iron), at least two wide and two high.
    • Build the wall around it to contain it. Leave enough empty space above the portcullis to allow it to go as high as you want it to go.
    • Power the portcullis by powering one of the blocks adjacent to it on either side, by attaching a lever or redstone dust. For now, the power has to come from the side.
    • The result should look something like this:
    • When the block is powered, the portcullis will start moving upwards, and will keep going until it hits something and can't go any further. It moves slowly, since a portcullis is heavy!
    • Important: make sure that when it is in the up position, it is still in contact with a powered block (the same one, or a different one).
    • When the power goes off, the portcullis will drop down (a lot faster than it went up).
    • Decorate the gate by building walls in front of and behind the portcullis to cover the empty space and to make it appear the portcullis is moving in a groove. Of course you can make it look any way you want! Here is an example:

    Hints and tips:
    • The portcullis can be any size you want, as long as it is at least two blocks wide and two blocks high. It must be rectangular though, and have no holes. If the portcullis breaks, it won't move any more until you repair it.
    • Try to make the empty space above the portcullis one block less high than the portcullis itself (like in the first picture above). That way, you only need to power one block (the one in the middle on either side), since that block will always be in contact with the portcullis.
    • Of course the empty space can be even smaller, if you want. The portcullis only has to go up two blocks to let people through, or three if you want the passage to be a little less claustrophobic.
    • The portcullis will go through (and hold back) water and lava, so you can make water gates and water or lava traps with them.

To anyone who is still seeing sporadic errors from this plugin in their server logs, please vote for bug 717. It's not getting any attention, and it could be causing problems for other plugins as well, so let's try to bring it to the attention of the Bukkit developers.

Once your port is in the fully up position run redstone power to it and then cut the power

Can't give you more advice than that because your post doesn't give me anything to work with besides "It broke"
server log, screenshots etc would be helpful

Like Maxis010 says, you need to make sure that when the portcullis is raised it is still adjacent to a redstone powered block (the same one, or a different one). Did you manage to get it to work?

    Fantastic plugin, thank you!!!

  8. Ok... I used to like this because the commands made it so simple and easy to use, but this new update... HOW... do I create a portcullis? never saw instruction on how to create one...

Also, do I have to use Redstone?... Redstone works better for money... at least until Notch decided the coinage would be good, but isn't there a way I could have it powered WITHOUT Redstone? like it used to work, because back when it was all commands, it was so easy, this made it harder...

This plugin has always operated with no commands and only redstone. I'm guessing that you are thinking about the (now inactive) Portcullis plugin.

  10. How do I build it.... it tells me I have to build the portcullis yet no instruction was given...

As Emperor of Mankind, you're probably above the tedium of having to read instructions, so I'll cut you a little slack. But His Imperial Majesty may want to have one of his loyal advisors read the Usage and Hints and Tips sections at the top of the page. Maybe even check out the little video on page 1 of this thread.

My only wish with this plugin is that we could change how fast the gate rises. Would be perfect if it was the same speed for up and down. Awesome anyway, and it's definitely now a part of my server!

In theory the idea is great but it would mean that the plugin stops being no config and/or no commands which is something I like in simple plugins, less things to break it so less people complaining about it, and fewer posts mentally tagged as PEBKAC

Unless they're just the same speed up and down. Period. :p

I installed this mod and it doesn't work. I made the gate the way it was made in the picture. The fence doesn't move up or do anything. Is there something wrong with what I am doing or the mod?

I think you probably didn't build it correctly, as the plugin seems to be quite reliable from other people's reports. Take a close look again and make sure everything is exactly the same as in the picture, especially where the redstone goes. If you still can't get it to work, post a picture of what you built (from such an angle that the redstone is plainly visible) so I can take a look at it.

A portcullis is big and very heavy. Hoisting it is slow and hard work. Dropping it, on the other hand, is very easy, since gravity will do all the work for you and drop it down quickly.

It's very much a 1 size fits all scenario, for players that want realism the current set up works
For players that want simplicity your idea works
I doubt the Capt is going to change the speed for 1 person so either stick with it or work out how to modify the speed yourself

Yeah i completely agree. I wish I could change the speed for the purposes of elevators with this plugin but as it is currently it does a great job of making those elevators seem like Medieval hoists.

Don't give in!!!! (no matter how much I personally want a config) (can you PM me a version with config :p)

    @ Captain Chaos
Do you have any plans to add config or commands to this plugin
    OP Quote
You consider no commands to be a feature
Granted the Stateless one is out of context but it still doesn't have anything to save with no config

I feel it best to ask the guy with the Source than post one thing and be told another 5 posts down

I've experimented some with this plugin, and it's great! I love how th gates are actually realistic for once(as realistic as can be when in minecraft) instead of the ones that just dissappear and appear from nowhere. :)

Edit: By the way, a request if possible: Printing custom text in the chat if a player activates a switch connected to a gate, that would be nice! Something like "screech!" or a custom message.

Nope, no plans. I do reserve the right to change my mind though... ;-)

Well DUH, we can't exactly take this post as a binding contract that will force you to never add cmds or configs

I can't seem to get a picture of it from fraps so I made a video and put it on my youtube. I walk around my creation and show where all the redstone are placed and what it does when I activate it. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GMtxxMe_idQ

Alright, I take it back. As far as I can see you built it completely correctly. I don't know why it doesn't work.

Are you sure the plugin is being loaded? There should be a line in the server.log saying "[PorteCoulissante] plugin version 1.2.1 by Captain_Chaos enabled". Are there no errors in the server log? Do you have other plugins loaded which may be conflicting with PorteCoulissante?

My server runs CommandBook, WorldEdit, MyHome and MyWarp. I added the PorteCoulissante and ColorSign plugins yesterday but neither show up in the log. I added another plugin which worked called Chestlock. All of the plugins except PorteCoulissante show up on the server log. I still don't understand what I am doing wrong.

YAY! I got it working... I don't know if I was supposed to do this but I got it working this way. I took the .jar file from the .zip file and placed it in my plugin folder.

Yes, that's what you are supposed to do. The .zip file is just the way the plugin is distributed.

Edit: oops, didn't see you there Galrath. Thanks. :)

Excellent plugin. Working great and making my users happy. Stacking redstone torches on blocks has never been a more useful skill.

    Es tu français ?
