I have 69 plugins installed on my Bukkit server, and it's still less laggy than the vanilla server is. I use (and host on) a Toshiba Satelite L300D laptop (it's a few years old), and here's some info about it:
Operating system: Ubuntu 11.04 Natty Narwhal
3 GB RAM (Don't know what type)
300 GB Hard drive
ATI Radeon graphics card (not sure which number model thingy)
AMD 64 Turion x2 (That's dual core) processor CPU thingy. The frequency can go up to 2 GHz, but my server still isn't laggy if I put it down to 800 MHz. There's something wrong with your computer if Bukkit is laggier than vanilla.

Oh, and to iPhysX: I saw part of CenZor's code on pastebin
