Is anyone interested in a mailing list (google groups) for large servers? I love these forums, but wading through 20 posts a day for people asking simple questions that can be found in the howto's gets old. I would like a good source of info without that, some place to trade ideas on running a larger bukkit server and to post questions if they come up.

There is no way to prevent anyone from joining, aside from moderation, and I don't want that, it will be open to the public, but the discussions will be directed towards large servers (20+ or so) but would love it if some of the really large servers would join as well, there are a few out there that push 80 to 100 all the time.

My server isn't giant-giant, but I consider myself one of the more dedicated and competent server owners. I'd love to get in on this.

Just follow one or both of the links in the OP.

It might be better to setup an area for serious issues/discussion on Bukkit on here, since everyone is already a member. Anyone who posts without searching or is blatantly lazy will lose access to that section. Thoughts?

Or it could operate off of an invitation system through IRC application or something. I'm open to ideas.

It might be beneficial to work both ends of that. It would be nice if you had to apply for membership or something, I expect some server owners from "the other side" (gasp) will try and get in and not necessarily be the right kind of person for a group like this.

Good idea but I'd rather forum admins come down harder on the general public for being lazy, lame, whatever.

We're stuck between a rock and a hard place. We want to clean up the forums, but at the same time we don't want to drive people away. I think the solution is a combination of the idea I have above + an improvement on user-friendliness and better resources for server admins. All of which will take time.

I agree, and I'm open for anything, either way about it, it will put a higher load on you and your moderating team ES, and that was not my intent with bringing this up. If there is anything I can do to help, I will gladly do so.

I'll work on something soon. But please let me be clear, this new section will be for server admins to discuss things without having to sift through the mess of already answered questions in Bukkit Help. This is not an avenue for better discussion with the Team, apart from myself. This change should help with improving the quality of bug reports we get and result in less lost and wasted time on my part sifting through the useless reports that don't provide any information. I'm guessing this is fine with everyone since the aim of the newsgroup idea presented in the OP wouldn't achieve better communication with the Bukkit Team, either.

My goal with this was better communication amongst the group who are dealing with similar issues, and not having to sift through tons of the same posts. The challenges I face with a growing server may help someone else in the same predicament, and hopefully we can learn from each other.

can you keep the new section readable by anyone, but only allow people to post if approved type of thing? i ask simple/stupid questions a lot and wouldn't mind being prevented from asking such questions, but i also learn a lot from reading what smart people have to say.

I'd honestly rather do a mailing list, but either way works for me. The thing is I don't typically go out of my way to read a forum, but if I get an email, I will read it.
