Would it be best, if I stored on conversion, the UUID and name, just in-case people want to go back and use names (before 1.8)?

  2. If it's your server, i would do so, no matter what people say :). If there are bugs, you have some original combinations stored. You should also not override old entries if something changes, if you want to be able to track things back.

It's for a plugin on DBO, so I'll store them but not have a built in way to reverse the conversion and if people want to be able to, then I'll add it in.

  4. Best ask the people who use your plugin, i would say.

If your plugin allows referencing offline players, it'll be more questions of how to do that.

If Mojang adds that names stay the same for old versions, then one would have to store the "oldest" combination, though even the oldest one could be wrong for players that joined in 1.8, before having the server change back to 1.7 or 1.6. Pretty unlikely if you ask me.

Against accidental updating a simple full data backup, to which one can roll back, probably is a reasonably simple approach. Detecting the MC version etc., if people change to and fro, it'll be chaos for the though (and probably anyway).
