I have done this on my server, with craftbukkit i downloaded from dl.bukkit.org. I used the color codes found on the wiki, but instead of & i used §

Code:
§

Can't you do this in vanilla with what zachrywilsn said?

Like a Minecraft.net.jar server if that makes sense? An if so idk. I think only bukkit or spigot but you can run them vanilla.

zachrywilsn Just did a bit of research (like 2 minutes) and it looks like it works in vanilla :)

The color codes work for all servers. I verified it works on vanilla Minecraft Server 1.7.9, 1.6.4 and even 1.4.2. If it works in vanilla, it is supposed to work in all variants such as CraftBukkit, Spigot, MCPC+, etc.

Code:
motd=§2A §3M§4i§5n§6e§7c§8r§9a§a§bf§ct §dS§ee§frver §k888
