PorteCoulissante - The easy and realistic portcullis plugin:

Build redstone powered portcullises, without using commands! This is my first ever Minecraft plugin, so please be gentle! I needed a project for my first plugin, and I've always wanted a working portcullis in my town gate, so I decided to write this. I subsequently discovered that there already is a portcullis plugin (which is why I named mine after the French word that the word portcullis was derived from), but I think mine has enough distinguishing features to be useful.

Download the latest release from the BukkitDev page.

Also check out the new sister plugin, RetractableBridge, which does basically the same thing, only horizontally.

    Features:
    • It doesn't use commands. Just build the portcullis and it will work.
    • Stateless, i.e. it does not have to save anything on the server.
    • It's redstone powered, giving you flexibility in controlling it.
    • It is realistic. The portcullis does not disappear, but moves up and down just like a real one would.
    Usage:
    • Build the portcullis itself by stacking rows of fences (wood or iron), at least two wide and two high.
    • Build the wall around it to contain it. Leave enough empty space above the portcullis to allow it to go as high as you want it to go.
    • Power the portcullis by powering one of the blocks adjacent to it on either side, by attaching a lever or redstone dust. For now, the power has to come from the side.
    • The result should look something like this:
    • When the block is powered, the portcullis will start moving upwards, and will keep going until it hits something and can't go any further. It moves slowly, since a portcullis is heavy!
    • Important: make sure that when it is in the up position, it is still in contact with a powered block (the same one, or a different one).
    • When the power goes off, the portcullis will drop down (a lot faster than it went up).
    • Decorate the gate by building walls in front of and behind the portcullis to cover the empty space and to make it appear the portcullis is moving in a groove. Of course you can make it look any way you want! Here is an example:

    Hints and tips:
    • The portcullis can be any size you want, as long as it is at least two blocks wide and two blocks high. It must be rectangular though, and have no holes. If the portcullis breaks, it won't move any more until you repair it.
    • Try to make the empty space above the portcullis one block less high than the portcullis itself (like in the first picture above). That way, you only need to power one block (the one in the middle on either side), since that block will always be in contact with the portcullis.
    • Of course the empty space can be even smaller, if you want. The portcullis only has to go up two blocks to let people through, or three if you want the passage to be a little less claustrophobic.
    • The portcullis will go through (and hold back) water and lava, so you can make water gates and water or lava traps with them.

I'm not sure what you're on about... ;-)

There already is a second plugin for bridges: RetractableBridge. And I'm not planning on adding anything else to this plugin, I agree with you, plugins should be simple and stable.

That what you write is same as i mean.

Please don't merge all plugins you develope to "one" i mean i like it more when you seperate them like you now do

    @Captain Chaos

Love your plugins. Using them both not to nag but is there anyway its possible we could get a retractable wall plugin for hidden entrances and such? Id figure Id ask you because your plugins are so simple no commands nothing. Very easy to teach users how to build their own!

Dont' worry, I have no plans to do that...

The problem I see with that is that it would be hard to figure out a way to determine which bit of wall should move, without using commands, and without everybody's walls which happen to be next to a bit of redstone disappearing into the distance. ;-)

Not to mention that if you want to use it for hidden entrances it also can't look different than the surroundings.

haha it would be quite comical.

I see where the problems would lie, i just wasnt sure if there was a way around it. lol maybe one day minecraft will be full of hidden retractable walls with passages, i guess just not today

I use this plugin as a makeshift elevator as is. Sure you have to jump as it moves up, but it works great on the way down.

Could you make it for bookshelves only? With the redstone applied to the back side of the shelf so that it is easy to hide?

I think I would be suspicious of strange bookshelves on the outsides of castle walls... ;-)

I just released version 1.2.0 of the plugin. This version will move any entities or items standing on top of the portcullis upwards when the portcullis is hoisted. If you're not careful it will crush you against the ceiling! Download it here, or from the top post.

Wow, this is exactly what I have been waiting for! Cant wait to try it out. At least until you make an official easy elevator plugin ;)

Just did a test with a port-evator, it still seems to move right through my player, only raising me if I jump. This is with 1.2, are there certain dimensions it must be to lift you?

It only works with CraftBukkit build 626 or later. I should have mentioned that, sorry. Which CraftBukkit build are you running?

Ahh, I am still running 617. I was hoping to hold off on the next update till 1.5 since I just got it all working recently. Ill see if I can wait
    Thanks for the reply!

Really like the plugin, perfect for castles. Quick question though. I'm pretty ignorant when it comes to figuring out how redstone circuits and such work, but is it possible to have a gate such as this with a switch on both sides of a wall? So that you could flip a switch to open the gate, go through, then flip a switch on the other side to close it behind you?

This was actually my first redstone logic circuit, and it was a fun one to learn!

I can give you a quick description of how mine is setup. There is a button on each side both wired to the signal side of a RS-NOR Latch, and Y'd off to a series of about 12 repeaters set to max delay. the reapeaters are then connected to the reset line of the Latch and the ON side of the latch is wired to the portcullis. When you press the button, it latches the RS-NOR into the ON position, and at the same time starts the delay circuit, when the delay timer runs out it activates the reset line on the Latch flipping it to the OFF position. With this setup it gives you enough time to walk through the gate and then it auto closes a few seconds later.
Alternately, a T-FlipFlop instead of a Latch would let you toggle the gate open or closed, if thats what you are into I can describe that one too, I just set that up on a drawbridge with the sister mod to this one. Hope that helps!

Very nice plugin, well designed and implemented. One question. Would it be possible to have an option to change the material that the portcullis is made from? Friends and I would like to make a fallout 3 style vault door type thing. Other than that its fantastic. we use it in our castle and its perfect

I was thinking of interior secret doors. For castle walls I prefer secret tunnels anyway.

Also thanks for the update with entities being moved... going to check that out now.

odd... doesn't seem to be working for me... what version of bukkit is 1.2.1 tested on?

[edit] nevermind just read where you stated 626 or later... off to update

after updating to 677 it works great thanks again!!

Is there any way to make a plugin like this where you have doors that could slide open? I don't imagine its possible because it wouldn't know where the split in the doors are (Like with the drawbridge plugin where if you stopped it with a brick of the same kind it became part of the bridge). But would it be possible to make an entire door slide horizontally into a gap?

It's possible of course, but I'm not currently planning on writing such a plugin. I'm busy enough as it is with these two plugins and WorldPainter, besides my paying job. ;-) But who knows, in the future!

I love this plugin, it's great but I was wondering, do you think it would ever be possible to make them move smoothly rather than in steps, like how sand falls.

    Maxis010

Another plugin called MoveCraft already tried this, smooth motion is impossible, ask again if notch adds support for smooth motion with other blocks when he adds modding
P.S So far as I know the falling sand and gravel is client side

Brilliant plugin! Any chance you can make the up/down speeds configurable though? I find it a bit slow on the way up, especially noticeable on small gates/portcullises.

I downloaded your plugin and started trying to use it right before beta 1.5 rolled out so... i know that this plugin -can- work exceedingly well, however... it doesn't seem to work in beta 1.5. I wish I had started using it sooner so I could have actually built some nice things using it. I will say this, this plugin was is working wonderfully with the FenceStack plugin before 1.5 came along.

Captain Chaos, even though I only have (nonworking) portcullis built, I will give you a server invite... just p/m me for the details :)

edit: Apparently i was trying to power the gate incorrectly. Thanks valdark for pointing out that it actually does work in 706. That caused me to test further. =)

Glad I could help but you should really thank Captain Chaos for making such a stable mod. I haven't had to touch it since I plugged it in on 1.3

Except to upgrade to the Elevator version that is.

Is this working on 733? I have it running now but am away from my real computer and want to know if I should prepare to update.
