Simply connect with 'localhost' if youre hosting the server on your computer.

If you can't connect with your public IP, try connecting with your local IP.
On a mac, go to system preferences>network and it should say "Connected to <Your Router Name Here> with the IP 192.168.x.x
Use that plus your port to connect to your server, and see if it works.

Ok, first make sure that there is nothing in your Server IP in the server.properties.
    Secondly, download portmap here: https://www.macupdate.com/app/mac/27342/port-map

    Next, go to file>new mapping.

Fill it in like on those youtube tutorials, with the desired port being 25565 and the name being minecraft.

After that, if the circle turns green, just copy and paste the large IP (your public IP) along with the port, 25565, added to the end behind a colon. This is your new IP for your friends to connect with.

If you can't connect with that IP, try connecting with your local IP. It is the smaller IP right above the big, public one. Make sure to add the port at the end. The local IP should look something like this: 192.168.X.X:25565, the X's being whatever numbers are displayed.

If the little circle is red, and it says "Router Incompatible", then try restarting your router. You can do this by turning off the power switch and then turning it back on after 10-15 seconds. Then fire up port map again and you should be good to go.

    Hope this helps,

    Step 1: Port forward
Step 2: You should connect with localhost
Step 3: Give the players your public ip to connect with
