So this host provides you with an OS that's easily compromised? Sounds like a good reason to run away from this hosting provider.

No this is why you avoid windows...

This is what is known as an unmanaged server. You are responsible for maintaining and securing it yourself. It is standard practice. Windows is not "less secure" - it is just targeted more frequently because it is by far the most used operating system. There is no such thing as totally secure, linux included. Anybody that even utters those words has absolutely no idea what they are talking about.

So tl;dr if I built a computer but never plugged it in to the internet in any way, shape, or form, it's still not secure and probably has a virus?

Jade - Yep. Viruses and hackers will spontaneously attack your box. It's like perpetual motion and cold fusion all wrapped into one. If we could harness that malevolent force, we'd rule the galaxy...

    wait what?

It doesn't come with a unique root password?

yea thats almost correct its what is pre installed on their iso, with copSsh is nothing wrong but because the ssh keys are default and didnt got changed since the leak its potential dangerous for users with zero ssh experience and which only depends on rdp

most of the time when I reinstall the server first when I login is looking into task manager mostly there are allready bots active so i disconnect them, use net user to remove their account, then remove their user folder, then I disable The Administrator account then unistall copSsh and all other pre installed software, then I install outpost firewall and enable icmp other way ovh could block your server for 'attack' but its a bug in their system, Im not sure if their linux image is safer though but for windows you need to be carefull.

xize - Yeah; I think the issue is simply just being unmanaged. It's hard to know what is enabled and isn't. I know others have suggested it, and I'm sure its not a bad idea, but I might completely reload your dedicated server so that you know exactly whats on it. Granted I'm not sure how easy this is to do for a windows server, but it seems like the issue here was that you weren't aware of how the server was setup and so people were able to take advantage of default ssh keys.

Support is awful. HDD broken? Except at least a couple of days downtime.
