I'm buying a new PC and since I have the money, I'm going to build it. Here are my specs: http://pcpartpicker.com/p/1ak2g
I curious as to what is better for hosting: Windows 8 or Linux? If Linux, which distro? So far Ubuntu and CentOS are looking good.

Linux if you have previous experiences/knowledge about it, otherwise windows 8 :). Goodluck!

klofno1 Thanks, if I run McMyAdmin, would that be any different than running pure CraftBukkit on its own? Would that affect this situation? BTW: I am more comfortable with Unix-based operating systems and Linux than Windows.

Are you going to be using it solely for a server? If so I use CentOS, best server OS in my opinion.

Your computer is extremely unbalanced. Why are you buying a Xeon? Why are you buying a sound card? Why do you need 16GB RAM? Why do you need an aftermarket CPU cooler? And why on earth would you buy a laptop hard drive?

This is a more balanced build that I made for you: http://pcpartpicker.com/p/1iMrA

Linux is great because it is SO customizable and there are alot of open source programs that can help you with your issues. However, it can become very steep to learn some of the things that you "should do" and the things that you "must not do". I have had to reset many an install simply because I used the wrong letter in a command.

Windows is probably the most common depending on how you look at it. It has full support for almost everything Bukkit. There are a few external dependencies I believe, but they are easily attained.

Mac is also a good OS. Typically the only people running a server from their mac is someone that repurposed an old Mac Mini or are running it for short periods at a time. It has native support for most everything Bukkit.

It basically boils down to what you feel more comfortable with. Do you want to "learn" linux? Do you want to stick with Windows/Mac depending on what you already own?

For starters running windows 8 is always a mistake. So some flavor of unix. I would use Ubuntu but it is up to ya.

I am planning to also use it for other purposes. It will be about 75% server though, I will use my MacBook for most other computer purposes.

Sushi Thank you so much for building a nicer PC for me! I am somewhat of a n00b at building computers.

zeeveener I actually host my current server on the iMac in my office, OS X has proved to be a nice operating system and I don't want to get into Hackintosh for a first time PC builder.

If you are using it to host a server, you may actually want to double down on memory, bump up the CPU a little, and bump down the GPU a bit.

Sushi What is a GPU vs. CPU?

  11. Offline

    Sushi

GPU helps you play games (video card). CPU helps you do pretty much everything else.

Sushi Okay, thanks :) I picked Intel Xeon because it is meant to have the power of i7 but it lasts 24/7 only with occasional reboots. If I were to stay with Xeon, what GPU would be good?

    I have Windows 8. It's trash.

if you get StartIsBack it becomes a pretty nice OS.

It doesn't have the power of i7. Most processors are going to last 24/7. You get what you pay for. An i7 is going to set you back more than that Xeon. I would honestly pick if you're going to use it for a server or only as a server 75% of the time. If you only use it as a server get the Xeon and no graphics card. You won't need one, because you will just be running Linux in text mode to host a server (to save $$$).

Otherwise, get the AMD build I made for you.

rguz10 Surfing the interwebs, playing minecraft, skype. I won't be playing any games other than minecraft.
Sushi Another person set this up for me: http://pcpartpicker.com/p/1iQmp
    Is it worth it?
Archarin With a start button, how the heck do you get back to the Metro UI?

    What do you mean?

    bm11111

Archarin You press the windows button to get back to Metro, but if it had start then wouldn't you go there when you press the windows button? I am considering a Dual boot with Windows 8 and CentOS but I won't be on Win8 that much because my server is supposed to be 24/7. I just don't have the money to pay monthly hosting, that is why I am buying these parts.

I set it CTRL+WIN to get to Metro.

Archarin Where would you set that? Also, is it worth it to get Windows?

Honestly. I use Windows 8 with the program StartIsBack. It's basically "Windows 7.5". StartIsBack allows you to edit everything. You get custom start buttons, you can boot directly into your desktop and disable "charms".

Archarin I am aware of what StartIsBack is. If you were hosting a server, would you use Windows or Linux? Windows seems cool but Linux seems practical.

I would use Ubuntu desktop, more efficient than windows, it's good for servers, and it can run everything you want it to.

    Archarin

I would think Windows would be easier to run a server on. If you have experience with Linux then I would probably go for Linux.

But Linux is so easy to learn. This guy comes off as intelligent and teachable. He can build a PC, and seems like he is willing to learn the rest. A desktop Linux distro such as Ubuntu will fair well with him. Right? It's not like he's all like "mi srever is rlly lagggggy fiz it 4 mu"

rguz10 Archarin I started using Ubuntu when I was 12, loved it. I have heard that it is not so good for servers, but those forum posts could be wrong. Ironically enough, at the moment I am making a home server on my old hp laptop that I just put Ubuntu on. I tried the desktop Ubuntu and I liked it. If I decided to dual boot, would I be able to acces Windows files on Linux and Linux files on Windows? If I can't do it, is there a third-party program for it? It would be cool to alternate operating systems when running a server.

No. Get this. For Minecraft only, the 7870 is overkill. You should get an SSD. Don't get the Xeon, get the i5 I'm showing you. The Xeon is old generation.

Ubuntu is good for servers. Don't listen to anyone when it comes to what Linux distributions you need for servers. For example, a lot of people are going to tell you Fedora is bad for servers too because it's a cutting edge distribution. It just really depends on your needs. If you dual boot, you can access Windows files from Linux, but you can't access Linux files from Windows. It's just the closed nature of Microsoft's operating system where they refuse to recognize Linux's file system. There are third party programs for Windows available that allow you to go ahead and access your Linux partition from Windows, but their performance is going to be spotty at best.

Sushi So for a server, i5 would be better than the AMD you showed me earlier?

Iroh So Linux distros and OS X seems good?

Linux is best for this type of thing. I wouldn't really go for OS X.

Iroh I actually use OS X now and it is great! I just want/need better hardware for my server. CentOS seems like the best so far. Ubuntu is good too. I already know what I am doing for the OS, some Linux distro. I'm just figuring out the hardware.
