Hi, I've been running a server for 15 people with about 10 plugins on my dad's old Windows XP PC. I've found that it is not very good at handling it and I was considering buying a cheap low-power mini pc just to run the server and nothing else. The two computers I am interested in are the Cubieboard and the Sapphire Edge Mini PC. My question is which one would run the server better if it can at all, and is it worth the price.

    Cubieboard specs:
    -Runs Ubuntu Linux
    -1Ghz processor
    -1GB RAM
    -$49

    Sapphire Edge Mini PC specs:
    -Runs Windows 7
    -1.6Ghz processor
    -2GB RAM
    -$199

You can check out these links for more detailed information:

Right now I prefer the Cubieboard because of the price, but I'm not sure if the parts are good enough and I've never used Linux before so I'm not really sure how craftbukkit works on Ubuntu.

Thanks for any suggestions and tips!

EDIT: Also if you know of any other cheap mini pcs that would handle a 15 person server, feel free to let me know.

For 15 people, you'll need more than 1GB RAM (usual recommendation is 100MB/person, more for lots of plugins).

    None...

The Cubieboard runs an ARM CPU and the other one runs an Atom. None of which are capable of hosting a 15 man server.

    What's your budget?

My budget is around 200 dollars. I did find this thing called the intel NUC that can have up to 16GB RAM and has a 1.8Ghz i3 processor. I think it could run the server well but it's also $300.

not necessarily, i've fit 200 + on 720mb ram. What it really depends on the type of server, how much world, etc.

My server has 6 worlds including the nether and the end, and there might be more in the future. It's a bukkit server with 10 plugins. Also, would it help if I used Nolagg and nospawnchunks?

I'm still not sure what to do. What is my best option? Could the Cubieboard handle it? I have seen videos of people with servers on even less powerful computers, so it could be possible.

100mb per player? So not needed.

I ran a 50-60 player server with 1.5gb before, just depends if you add many pointless plugins or do it the right way. ;)

So does that mean the Cubieboard would work? I would really like to use it.

I honestly don't know anything about that, but I want one now. :D
Reminds me of the Rasberry Pi - http://www.raspberrypi.org/

Ya it's a lot like the Raspberry Pi but it's like twice as powerful in some ways.

  13. I'm running my server on a HP ProLiant N40L with 16GB ram becuase I use it for other things like a media and web server, but I have 8GB ram assigned to running the Minecraft Server, there is no lag with 4 people on and with around 15 plugins active. Lag is also dependant on your internet connection as well as the PC running it. Try something like this: http://canihostaminecraftserver.com/

I'm going to be honest with you, you have no chance, you wont even be able to allocate 1 gb of ram to your server with this cubie because of the operating system. With six world and over 15 players it wouldn't make a difference what plugins you give it, this thing isn't going to get the job done. Lets not also forget you're running a CPU at 1ghz with no overclocking potential. Your ram is quite nice though @4800mhz, but I would be willing to bet the reason why they don't list the CAS latency is because it's awful. I may be wrong about that, but its just a guess. Either way, you're wasting your money on something like this, sorry man. PM if you have more questions about the system or other cheap alternatives.

Why not just rent a server for a few months with your budget?

Rent a server both are very weak and underpowered, you'll get 20-30 players smoothly if you rent a server,
Look at GoDaddy, UnqHosting, or a VPS.
