A new CraftBukkit Beta Build (1.4.5-R0.2) that provides Minecraft 1.4.5 compatibility is now available! Please only use this build if you'd like to help us get a new Recommended Build out and don't mind running a preview build to help us test things. The previous beta is considered broken and will be marked as such on dl.bukkit.org. This beta contains several critical changes and as such updating to this beta is highly recommended.

Will plugins break with this build?
Provided the developers of the plugins you are using are keeping up with the development of Bukkit, all your plugins should work fine. Unless we specifically have to break plugins or the plugins you are using are employing inappropriate practises, most plugins should work without needing an update whenever we put out a new release.

    What is a Beta build?
A Beta Build is in between a developer build and a Recommended Build. These builds simply work and are promoted much more frequently than a Recommended Build. While we will do some testing before promoting a beta build, we will not be running it through our extensive test process. As such, there are no guarantees that they will not contain minor bugs. If we do find out they are broken, we will mark it as such on DLB and promote a new one. A beta build may contain incomplete API and new features but they should not interfere with running the build in any way.

    Notes:
The release of Minecraft 1.3 introduced built in auto-save functionality that is completely new to Minecraft: prior to this release, server admins had to provide their own means to save things on their server at a set interval. As a result, the vast majority of servers already have an auto-saving mechanism of some sort, rendering the newly provided built in auto-save largely redundant. On top of this, it was also immediately noticeable that the built in auto-save was the cause of a significant performance hit to the server, even going so far as to lock up the server each time it ran.

Bearing this in mind, we decided the best course of action was to make the auto-save interval configurable and default to being disabled. By doing so we immediately saw a noticeable performance increase on servers and noticed overwhelmingly positive feedback on our Beta builds. While some might argue that this could leave servers without frequent saving, this change simply reverts behaviour back to what server admins are familiar with from Minecraft 1.2.5.

As mentioned before, we have made the auto-save interval configurable and disableable within the bukkit.yml. Simply set "ticks-per.autosave" to the number of ticks you want between each save or set it to 0 to disable it completely and use a script or plugin to manage it instead.

    Known Issues:
    • Client displays "Unable to locate sign" debug messages under certain circumstances. This is a Minecraft client change that can't be fixed by Bukkit.
    • Monsters, villagers, etc. using portals (added in Minecraft 1.4) has been temporarily disabled.
For more detailed information on what is contained in this update, please see the changelog here.

So, your logic is as following:
A new patch is about to come out, so please work really hard on upgrading the beta to recommended, so you can start over in a week or 2.

I also run a small server (approximately 5 active players), and we switched to CraftBukkit 1.4.5 Beta a while ago and haven't had any issues. We run WorldEdit, WorldGuard, DynMap, and PermissionsEx. Everything that is advertised in vanilla 1.4.5 works (except apparently the mobs entering Nether portals, but I don't consider that to be a big deal)

As far as I am aware, the only major problem with using older plugins is with item frames. Since it uses a new "hanging" event - and so world-guard or any other older plugin won't recognize them or protect them. This isn't a complete list of issues, but is the biggest of them all.

Having said that, most, if not all plugins that are active have updated already, and it's just a case of over-writing the old plugin with the new one.

My only issue with the lack of an RB is that some plugin devs start dragging their feet about updates. Some get quite testy about it too

I think I'll stay where I am on 1.4.2. People keep "accidentally updating" (can we not get a "[X] Don't ask me again."?) but at least everything is working well atm :)

Our world dates back to Beta 1.4. We moved to Bukkit a few beta releases later, since the Bukkit team and modding community were doing a far better job at providing game fixes (and updates). I still think that is the case, however...

The server that I manage still has 12 of 26 mods that don't have a 1.4.x 'test' release against the current Beta, all but one of which are considered active. These impact our rail system, gates, economy, use of shrines and the End.

There is a disconnect between a large part of the modding community and Bukkit.

Part of the modding community doesn't have any interest in coding against a Beta Release that hasn't been tested and could be replaced by a new Beta an hour later, which is understandable. The current Beta has been out for several weeks, and for all intents and purposes might as well be an RB, except it hasn't been officially tested and stamped as such.

The previous Bukkit strategy was to get an RB tested and released so that the community could start to work on modding and upgrading servers with the new content; then work on an RB with new features and functionality based on the new content. The previous strategy was an ~3-6 week delay to an RB based on my experiences. Part of the reason Mojang releases a 'pre-release' was to help narrow the delay in experiencing new content for the modding community. Tomorrow will mark 8 weeks since the initial pre-release of 1.4.0 was made available.

The impact to our server is that we haven't been able to upgrade, since a few of the remaining mods are considered critical (breaking economy bad). Very few people are active and a few have been playing independently on vanilla. As a server administrator and player, I'm essentially caught in the middle between the part of the modding community that wants a stable release as a base for testing their existing mods and a Bukkit team that wants to release a single polished Recommended Build.

If the point is to have an active community that is interacting and enjoying the new content, then something has to change.

Unfortunately, our names for our releases strategy seems to be causing some confusion. Beta builds are as stable as any RB has been in the past, just not API complete. However, since we have not used Beta builds as extensively as we have since 1.4.x there has been some confusion as to what this really means. While we do recommend developers update for Beta builds, it seems there has been some reluctance.

We will look into what we can do to further address this slight shift in our build promotion strategy to better aid developers and administrators alike. Thank you for your comments.

Thank you. That is more than I hoped for; and I truly appreciate your response.

If there is something official I can link (or even the post above) I could at least reach out to our hosting provider as well as the more critical mods to pass along some clarification in the hopes they may recognize the Beta(s) as a supported release standard.

    -Thanks again
